If everyone would post what they know about monitors that strip well, have good specs and DO NOT have the FFC issues I believe it would help this forum tremendously. If the monitor has an FFC issue that is fixable that would be acceptable information as well. It would be great to only post about known monitors in this thread, please keep it on topic folks, thanks.

Here's the information we've scrounged or users have submitted as of last edit:

Che Mei corporation:
- CMV1515
- CMV1512
AKA:
- LiquidVideo NEG A150X1 formerly available at circuit city
- Polyview A150X1 518A (It hasn't yet been stripped but it bears the Che Mei model number A150X1, and for all intents and purposes looks exactly like a Che Mei CMV1515.)

These panels are:
500:1 contrast or higher
15ms response
XGA resolution

- Lilliput 7" SVGA 2400x480 dots widescreen panel (Ebay).

These things go for about $200 and are great for people who need a smaller projector. The resolution isn't as high as a 15" panel but it's perfectly acceptable for medium sized screens up to 8' diagonal. I'd imagine 6' screen size is optimal for these. There is no FFC issue but there is a small circuit board that must be bent 90 degrees from the panel; doing this requires no skill however, just move it out of the way. Make sure to get the SVGA panel, 2400x480 dots (they call it an XGA panel but it's really XGA compressed). This panel also has both composite and vga inputs (woo!), a remote, and 'fit to screen' options for 4:3 broadcasts.

Remember when dealing with many of these smaller panels the resolution is given in dots, not pixels. It's easy to get deceived this way because on the horizontal resolution each dot is actually just one of the RGB colors. If the resolution is 2400x480 dots you would get the actual pixel resolution by dividing the horizontal dot resolution by 3, giving you 800x480 pixels.

WARNING, very static sensitive.

Very easy to take apart.
All of the cables are real wires, only one FFC which is on the LCD panel and should not be a problem. The main cable that connects the LCD to the brain unit might need to be lengthened depending on how you mount the input connections. They are all real wires though and would not be that hard to do.

- Proview HD 572

Uses the LG 151 panel. There are ffc's from the panel itself to the 'brain' but you can bend them easily without damage, will post some pictures later.

Hi there,

I stripped a Samsung SyncMaster 510 MP 15" LCD TFT Display / TV last week and it was easy, no FFC's except the ones on the actual LCD... all the internal boards were connected with real wires.

This unit has VGA, S-Video, RCA video, and coaxial video in... and it has a built-in TV tuner.

Pics of the stripping here:

I bought an NEC 1510v recently, and it was extremely easy to strip.

These monitors are all over eBay, often missing their power cables. This puts people off as the cable is a horrible 12 pin thing, so they go very cheap (mine was Ł20).

However, a pinout is easily available on the internet, and you will find that 4 pins are 12v, 4 are ground, and 2 are signal cables used for power saving. Connect the 12v and ground to a nearby AT or ATX power supply, and leave the signal cables unplugged, and it will work fine!

It has 2 FFCs, both at the top right (on the right side of the panel itself), and although I managed to break mine, you should be OK.

I just won a Madcatz 7" Multimedia LCD panel in an office raffle, so I figured I'd give that a try instead of tearing up my Apple Studio display...(stupid thing was 1500.00 dollars when I bough it a few years ago... dry.gif ...only 15 inches too.)

Anywho, this little treat has a very good picture, which surprised me since most of the other portable monitors I've seen (excluding the Lilliput mind you), have been pretty lackluster. I've still to find tech specs on the contrast ratio and such.

It stripped like a dream. There is only one FFC at the bottom, and the board it connects to swivels easily to allow for various mounts. I'll post pics once I get my dig cam back from the woman. Only drawback is that it only has RCA and S-video connectors, no VGA. But that's perfect for my use.

Here's the monitor:
Madcatz.com

Edit:
Nevermind. While this panel is compatible, you're better off going with the Lilliput 7". Same price, higher res, more features. But if you happen to come across a really cheap or free one, it works fine for movies!

edit: ok, i think i've got them all. i've made two pdfs: one for the 15" and under, and one for the 17" and above.

the reason i'm doing this is so that people can just look at one page rather than having to scroll up and down to see if their monitor is on the compatible list.

if you don't want to download the pdf's, i've also posted images of the pdf's a few posts down.

Note: I've only added monitors that had lots of stats. there were some monitors that only had brand and product number, and nothing else. i therefore left the afore-mentioned monitors out.

QUOTE (clamps @ Dec 5 2004, 09:38 AM)
First may I say thanks very much for making such a cool list.

I see the Dell 152FP and 153FP, but I'm wondering about the 151FP. I have one available nearby, and I was going to buy it for my first projector. Does anyone know anything about this monitor?

Also, I found an interesting resource at this web site-
http://www.network54.com/Forum/87612
It's a monitor repair forum, and it's full of guys who stip monitors for a living. They might have some good info about FCC issues and such.
I've asked there about my 151FP. Who knows? They could become our partners in crime. (I'm talking about the crime of developing our own projectors)

actually I got a Dell 153FP today and it has an FFC issue. The cable is crazy short. it looks like the standard .5mm extension could possibly work but I'm not going to try. Sorry i dont have pictures to back it up (already put it back together and sold it to a friend) but take my word for it this monitor is only compatible if you can extend the cable.

I have stripped the Samsung 150MP 15" lcd/tv. It stripped easily and while there is an FFC, it is at the top of the screen ( which becomes the bottom), and it is about 2 inches long, and connected to a flat board. This is not a problem. On the side, there is a very skinny board connected directly to the edge connectors. This board can be mounted on the side of the enclosure, but might get it the way of the condensor fresnel if you want to correct keystoning via a central pivot point. I am simply gonna hang my condensor and allow gravity to keystone correct via a pivot point on the top. Also, I had to silicone the lcd to the metal frame because it simply sits in the white plastic frame that many lcds snap into. Here's a picture:

Just stripped the Samsung Syncmaster 570S. THis monitor, unlike the 570V has no FFC problems whatsoever. It was an incredibly easy monitor to strip, and all connections except the edge connectors are made using the little seperate wires instead of the FFC cables. Very convenient for lengthening if desired.

Summary: Samsung Syncmaster 570S is compatible! biggrin.gif

O.K. My first strip - but I've been taking s#$t apart since I was 2. Took me 10 minutes. Yes 10 minutes. I used a regular sized phillips head and a jewelers size phillips head---and I had like 3 scotches in me smile.gif. I took a picture of it but the file size is 320k and I haven't the time (scotch) to reduce it. The insides of this thing look just like this one

Just like Mine

I bought it from Amazon and it was called DCL DCL5B 15" LCD Monitor with Speakers (Black)

But the actual monitor says Scepter X5G-Komodo IV I've seen this model questioned before but no answers

Strips very easily - 2 Phillips screws to remove front cover, another 4 to remove back cover, and 3 screws to loosen two boards from back cover. Backlight pops easily out of metal frame.

Two very slim boards on top and left edges, one small mainboard connected by wires, one flat cable connecting buttons, and wires connecting DC plug board, and the inverter also connected by cables.

One FCC issue: Lower left corner, a 90 degree bend with 20 leads, 10 mm wide. Seems to me that this is a pretty standard size that can be fixed?

Left side board may interfere with keystoning.

Another 17" panel for the compatible list!

I just finished stripping my Dell E171FP. No FFC issues at all, it took me about 10 minutes to strip it. In fact, the only FFC in the monitor is a small one running to the buttons on the front of the panel. All other components are connected with wires.
clamps
The Viewsonic VC 150 is on the list, prompting me to buy one. But after stripping, I've found out that the model I bought has 3 FFC's with two of them being straight off the screen's side frame to a medium sized board that will prevent any mid-mounted Keystone solution. sad.gif

The model number is VLCDS21457-1
Manufactured in Feb 1999

I'm not sure how to proceed with this issue here. Should I post this in the INCOMPATABLE list too?
Red-24
Well I just stripped my first monitor. So I wanted to let all Canadian builders know that the LG L1530 15" monitor strips down beautifully with no FFC issues.

I got mine at London Drugs Canada for $299.99 with a $30 mail in rebate.

xarok / et all, I have made my investment on the Dell E153FP (15") too... after reading it was compatible.  So, in response... it appears like an extension of some sort "makes" it compatible - but it still needs extended (therefore, making it a candidate for compatibility).  Here is the picture to show what we (xarok and myself) have experienced.  Does anyone know if the cable for sale here at Lumenlab would make this particular FCC cable extend?

Three reference points drawn into the photo.

A - the end of the cable that appears to be permanently attached to the side FCC board.

B - The FCC cable

C - The end which appears to be removable.  I think I would need some type of cable that is male on one end, and female on the other.

Thanks - Polkaboy....

Toshiba SD-P2000 8.9" Portable DVD player.
Just stripped this panel and dvd player, and it comes apart nice! The LCD has very good resolution.. but response time is unknown. Great for a project if you can find one cheap, or one with a DVD player issue, and good LCD

Heres the link to the thread, with pics (in the 'smaller panels' section)

I just got a:

Samsung SyncMaster 730B
1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz

its really easy to strip, no ffc issues, although there was what looked like a 20 pin ffc connector on it so some models might have issues, although it is in an easy spot to fix if it was there, it also said LTM170EX-L21 on the back of the lcd inside

Bought and stripped a Packard Bell CT500c, but it needs a 20pins 0,5 FFC extention.

(Before I got the reflecting back off).

I stripped down a Dell 1505FP today. Exactly the same as the 1504.

Specs:
1024x768
16ms
DVI, VGA
USB built into control board, plus external control board that is easily detachable.
Extra 12VDC power supply from board, good for those 12V fans.

This was particularly easy to strip. The only 'problem' I had was discovering that the front bezel had to be removed first rather than the rear.

The only problem I can see having is the buttons for power, menu etc are small pcb mount buttons which I'll have to sort something out.

This type of monitor is always up for auction on Graysonline.com.au, so a great choice for Aussies, being that I scored this one for AU$159!!!

Big tick of approval! :-)

let me get this right, the main "compatability" issue is mearly just the FCC cable thing ?

so a monitor is deemed "compatible" if you dont have FCC cables, or its a simple cable replacement.. and a non compatible one is one that you CAN still do, but you would have to wire mod it to make it work ?

i have a mitsubishi DV172 (16ms 17") here that i can use, its 1280x1024 / DVI + dsub native.. if its just a case of making my own wire mod ill make it work smile.gif

mitsubishi made MANY panels for many other ppl.. thats the reason i ask..

i also have a 5" LCD sitting around here that im currently using.. ive been playing with LCDs for a while and thats why i thought i would do this mod smile.gif

http://www.rendle-realestate.com.au/quan/5inchLCD.aVi

check that out for some info on what i did. and i COULD make it work, but the res is a little low for whati want, and its only RCA input and CBF making my own circuit to get better quality as its not worth it on something that good.. but its good @ lans for winamp VIS..

I have successfully stripped a 15" Dell "ultrasharp" 1504FPa. No trouble stipping it at all, no FFC issues, just took my time and everything came apart logically.

The only tricky bits I remember are: (1) The case seperates with a bit of effort, there are clips all around, I damaged the outer plastic case and the locking clips using too much force with a screwdriver - I have read that easing the case apart with a credit card will do a better job of not leaving marks. (2) Some of the plugs have glue on them - just eased off the glue with pliers before trying to remove the plugs. (3) At the very end I did need to carefully pull off a fair bit of sticky metallic type tape to expose the wiring loom and seperate everything.

This is the first monitor I have stripped, so I was fortunate to choose one (by luck cool.gif ) that did not have any FFC issues and that still works after my amatuer job pulling it to bits.

To the best of my knowledge the specs are:
- 1024x768 60Hz native resolution (also 'syncs' at 75Hz)
- 25ms refresh
- 400:1 contrast ratio (but have also read it's 300:1 ?)
- Dot pitch 0.297mm
- DVI and VGA inputs

Got this one "manufacturer refurbished" (looked new) from grasyonline.com.au for $200 delivered to my door. They seem to sell a lot of TFT monitors on a regular basis, I guess they are end of lease or surplus given people are likely buying larger monitors thses days.

Knowing what I know now I would likely opt for a faster refresh rate - but anyway I wanted to pass on this information for the benefit of all as I didn't see this model already mentioned in the list.

Good luck & bring on those pro lenses.....

Summary:  Samsung Syncmaster 570S is compatible! biggrin.gif

Stripped the model above... and found this sad.gif

ALERT: Dell E153FPf has an FFC ISSUE!! Other versions may not, but the 'f' on the end means it has an issue. It is standard 0.5mm pitch and has 18 conductors but each of the outside conductors are DOUBLE width, meaning that you need a 20 pin extension!! I have one on order for this monitor and I will let you know if it works or not.

stay tuned...

Just incase it has not been mentioned(haven't looked through the whole thread), the LG 1530s is very easy to strip and has no FCCs to worry about. Only thing is that you need to mount the LCD in its metal frame, which for me made mounting it very easy.

If I ever get a new digi cam I'll post pics.

DO NOT BUY THE iLO monitor from Wal-Mart

I recently stripped one down and it really need two FFC extentions, andthe cables are extremely sensitive, they pop out if moved...

I do not reccomend it

17" Acer AL1715 stripped without any issues. Will post pictures in my plog.

Why is it that the incompatable list is in one forum, and the compatable list is in another??

Westinghouse 15" LCD Monitor Mdl LCM-15v5

For what it's worth, I stripped my LG1750 tonight.

I wasn't sure for a while htere, but in the end, it turned out perfect. No FFC issues at all, should be an excellent, compatable monitor.
