Dumb question:
Do I need anything for plugging/converting a DVD player into the BenQ FP591?
I don't have the dedicated DVD for this yet and if I need to look for the special jack on the DVD player then it would be best while I am purchasing the DVD.
The specs say: "Analog RGB and digital DVI-D inputs"
Please keep it in layman's terms! Pictures are awesome and appreciated!
Thanks.

the analog rgb is a old style computer monitor cable plug. and the dvi-d is the new style technology.
To find a dvd player that plugs right into that you will have to find a dvd player with ether RGB output or Dvi-D output. This is kind of tricky, not many dvd players have this, expect to spend a few 100 on it. Now if you are planning to have hdtv to this monitor you can get 2 birds with one stone, a decent number of hdtv receivers have the RGB or dvi-d output as an option. And what else is cool is they have hdtv receivers with dvd players built in. So hey you could get hdtv off the air for free and have a dvd player. These receivers are going for around 300 bucks, but its cheaper than buying both the dvd player and a hdtv receiver seperately.

Thanks Foamcows.
I just came back from Best Buy as well and they said that it would be quite expensive to do. I also don't want to spend money on HDTV when I don't have the capability (yet). Good suggestion, though.

So, the question is: Is everyone playing their DVDs off from their desktop or laptop computers?
OK. How about two questions: In the compatible list of monitors, which ones have the ability to plug a DVD into it?
Thanks again.

well the traditional plug to hook a dvd player up to anything is using component cables, the only LCD's that have component inputs that I can think of are the HDTV's aka 15in flat panel tv's that people use in place of a computer monitor.
Another way to get the dvd player to your projector is using a viewsonic N6. This is how I have my dvd player hooked into my projector. It has the inputs to hook up a standard dvd player and then it has the output of a RGB cable. It has a remote, it has a cable tv input, and 2 other device inputs.

what do you mean by have the compatibility yet? You can watch hdtv on a 15 inch panel, it will be at 480p. Its better than nothing. Plus when you get a 17 inch panel you can just change the settings to have the output at 720p and you wont have to buy anything new. If you were saying you dont have the compatibility yet because you do not have hdtv service, you dont need it, you can get hdtv over the air, aka using an antenna. Also the hdtv receivers will act like a regular cable box and then you will also be able to watch tv on the projector.

Cool. I thought you had to have digital cable to view anything in HDTV.
I am currently going through the compatibility list and looking for monitors that have the HDTV option.
Thanks again.

Checked into the Viewsonic N6. $205 bucks. A little pricey for me right now. I was thinking that there was a converter that went from the monitor directly into the DVD player (S-video) connection. Was expecting to pay $20 - $30 bucks (or so).
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Hi again.
Did more research and I am seeing that all of the compatible monitors do not have S-video connectors.
I can live with this, but how do you run Surround sound if you don't have a DVD player with surround sound capabilities? Does a desktop have this ability? THere is only a one prong jack in my desktop for speakers and surround sound needs more.
What have others done?
Thanks for the response.

they make sound cards that have more than the headphone jack for the output, this is how others are getting surround sound. These cards are more expensive.

check the product reviews forum they have a DVD player with VGA output for like 30-40 bucks on amazon after rebate, granted its probly only 640x480, and probly nowhere near the quality of a good scalling upconverter DVD player, but if your on a budget it will get the job done, you monitor should scale the 640x480 to whatever its native res is and you should get decent results
