As the question states, i'm wondering if i should bother purchasing one that size since i don't have a reflector yet. I'll be using the Ushio S400DD btw.

Everyone seems to be using the 1.5qt size so it begs the question... does anyone know if the 1.3qt size will work?

Thanks in advance of course

I'll be using a 1 quart from Linen and THings. It should work just fine. I'll post a picture of the reflector I'll be using. It is hemispherical. IT was insulated so, I'll be removing some of its back to let it dissipate heat better.

Actually in the meantime i've found a 16cm hemisphere bowl right here: http://www.jbprince.com/index.asp?PageActi...earch=GO&Page=1

It looks pretty shiny and only $18 + s/h to boot. I'll probably pull the trigger later tonite. Barring any revelations with the 1.3qt NorPro...

yours seems like a decent find too, hope it's the right size for what we need.

Edit: i need to get my calculations correct, 16cm may not be big enough. Doublecheck before buying.

Here shows the cutouts from the back side. I don't know if it is necessary but I didn't like the idea of having trapped air inside and pressure buildup. From this I should be able to mount without having to drill completely through the bowl.

Opps forgot the picture. THis bowl was 6.99 so I went ahead and got two. Here is the picture of the cutouts.

son of a gun, the norpro 1.3 qt is already sold out. Oh well, i should have known better than to dilly dally . Another thing i found out: the 1.3 qt was probably mislabeled and it was likely a 1.5qt bowl...hmmph

going to order the 18cm size @ JB Prince before those sell out as well, thats the same size as the norpro 1.5qt for whoever's curious.

i'll let everyone know my opinion before and after i install it wink.gif

Just to let you know, I talked to a customer service rep today about the JB 18cm mold. The JB bowl is nice polish on the external surface, but it is a "dull" unfinished inner surface. It will require a decent amount of elbow grease to make this particular mold worth using as a reflector.

I have a call into culinarycookware.com for this hemisphere mold Hopefully it is highly polished on both internal and external surfaces. I'll post as soon as I get word back.

I also am trying to get in touch with dr.ca, (all on vacation until 1/3/05) for this mould, scroll down to see the stainless steel half sphere mold. It looks a little shiny on the inner surface, but nothing like the standard Norpro bowls that look like a mirror.

I do not know, but I believe that all of the baking molds are brushed on the inside to aid in releasing the pastry from the mold.

Gcarter, That bowl looks like a good option. What is the diameter of that bowl? Is it only attached by the rim so someone could cut the outer bowl off by cutting the rim?

I reviewed the hemisphere mold awhile back. It is not polished on the inside. The sample I obtained was from JB Prince.

5" on the inside diameter

Well if that is the true radius(2.5"), that will put the outer envelope of the ED28 bulb at ~0.73" away from the back of the reflector. Not a lot of room, but it should work. There may be a greater chance of overheating the stainless but as long as there is a decent amount of airflow around the bulb, you should be OK. If It's an issue, you could cut the reflector down some so that it will not trap as much air.

Highly appreciate all the insite and advice & glad i held off buying the JB prince hemisphere. Will keep an eye out for other candidates in the meantime. If i make a "wildcard" purchase i'll post a description immediately.

I'm not terribly concerned since a reflector isn't vital to get a PJ up and running. I do want all the benefits it has to offer of course smile.gif

Oh yea, Happy New Year everybody !

The all-clad norpro2 1 quart looks interesting for a S400DD

It's linked off that not-so-round looking norpro on the williamglen.com site.
They also have the 1.5q for $42, which is unfortunately the standard price at this point I guess.
Well it looks like someone still carries the norpro 1.5qt. Now i'm just crossing my fingers hoping its still in stock.

A bit pricey @ $50 shipped but i'm assured a known high quality working design rolleyes.gif Not to mention that i won't be wasting anymore time hunting down a substitute wink.gif

Just picked up 2 1.5 qt Norpro bowls @ a TJMaxx 'n More in NJ today.

No grip rings, on clearance for $3.00 - what a deal.....

Might want to check out your local TJ Maxx, Marshalls or Homegoods stores.
