Full Version: Choosing an LCD

I am a newbie so correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t really see why it would be necessary to use a large LCD panel, isn't it all about how many pixels there are? All of the image gets condensed down to a point at the triplet lens anyway so does it really matter how big the image was before it was condensed. So assuming that my aforementioned logic is true, wouldn't the best LCD be a 1600 x 1200 15" display because it has a high resolution and a relatively small screen area (thus making it easy to illuminate evenly)

What your saying is almost right except you have a few thing wrong there. all 15 are 1024x768 there are no 1600x 15in lcds. In fact the difference between a 15 and a 17+ is just more pixles, what im saying is the pixles are the same size on a 15 vs 17 but on a 17 there are just more... bigger resolution. Most monitors have a dot pitch around 0.297 I belive that is pixel size. If they do(someday) make a 15 with a smaller dot pitch to get that kind of res I do think your right and it would be better. ps people like the sgi because of the small dot pitch I think. someone correct me if Im not right here

ps BE SHURE to look at the NATIVE or best resolution on the lcd specs (some may say they "support" higher but it just resizes them to the native resolution jult like something in 800x600 on a 15in would be made bigger to 1024x768 something bigger than 1024 would be made smaller

There are a lot of small LCD screens that have a high resolution (1600x1200).
They just happen to be for notebook computers. Has anyone looked into LCD controllers that may drive these smaller LCD panels.
Something like these: http://www.digitalview.com/de_product.php

Controllers for the high resolution laptop LCD's have been so far very difficult to get/make work. That would be the ultimate solution if anyone ever figures out how to do it.
NOT all pixels are the same size. Look at the Dell UWXGA 1900ish by 1200 15'' panels or Cruisers 17'' widescreen at the same resolution.

NiSuS have you priced any of those boards? I didn't see any pricing on the page only a listing of distributors. Would be a great idea if they were priced right and all the difficulities of interfacing correctly ironed out.

You need to be looking at the native resolution,, just because the laptop specs may say max res 1600 it might still be a 1024x768 lcd that can resize it. look at dot pitch or pixel pitch to see pixel size... if you cant find your native res listed use pixel size and compate it to other lcd that do say the native res and you will get a better idea of what it is..... im not saying that laptop isnt 1600x but I would check, that dosnt sound right for a 15

the sgi 1600sw is a .23 dot pitch (smallest I know of) and dose 1600xWhatever so the laptop lcd would have a smaller number cause if it claims 1600x as native cause its a smaller screen or thats not the native res

thanks for pointing that out,,,cruiser use a SGI i belive,,, that monitor has a very small pixel pitch ,,,, but cruiser definatly has a "pro" setup and damn good monitor (.23 dot pitch)cruiser's SGI is definatly an exception to what im trying to say... that is...

most all 17in have the same dot pitch as the 15s just more area giving a higher res... just look at the pixel pitch or dot pitch

start looking at the numbers on a few panels and you will get what im saying

oh and my recomend for a 15in lcd is a samsung 512n (look for deals got mine for 110) or the benq 15in, both have about the same specs and are easy to strip. I do like how you can re-use the front of the benq though(the controls) I dont know if the samsungs controls will look as good.

*EDIT I have been looking at some laptop lcd's and was very supprised to see there are better lcd's for laptop's sry for not belive you guys right off should done my research befor I posted all this

I have only seen OEM pricing too.

These controllers have DVI, HD15, S-Video, and Composite Video inputs.
The S-Video/Composite accepts NTSC/PAL/SECAM video signals, with IR remote.
They have both TTL and LVDS interfaces for the TFT LCD panel.

LL needs to investigate this with small hi-res bare LCD panels to put in their store.

Does anyone know of any product these are incorporated into that we might strip?

The folks at DigitalView has a nice "Controller Solution Generator" to pair up their controller boards with OEM panels. Check link http://www.digitalview.com/de_csg.php/

I'll check my panel at home to see if there is some kind of markings on it find out the exact LCD panel model.
