how do the computer pvr's i.e. the pvr 150 compare in access speed vs the standalone units such as the ones the cable company gives you. Also is there a difference in tuner quality in a pvr 150 vs hauppauge's just tuner. I.e. if im not going to use the pvr funstion and just need the tuning capabilities but want a good quality output signal.

Thanks in advance
Pacmanpth
you planning on using it to play any console games?
gabe
some but not heavy use i would like the capability though, also my cable box has a built in dvr so i will most likely be using that for recording until i lose the cable about 6 months from now. so i think i am thinking about the pvr 150 mce since i already have a remote. what do you guys think. Im on some what of a budget and the $70 price tag on that is a nice price to pay. Also im sure i could do a search on this but since i have you guys here what program do you guys prefer. I have tried myHTPC so far its not bad seems a little slow though. ALso was considering WIN XP MCE. What do you guys think.

the hauppage pvr's use hardware encoding therefor there is a 2-3 second or so delay between when the video is sent asnd when it is displayed, so consoles are kind of unplayable on it.
Super_Bob
Ok i'm rather baffled but Pacmanpth is right, because of the encoders you cannot play computer games, on the flip side MCE needs the encoders so you cant use a normal card.

As for the tuner qualities comapred with cable i'm confused as to what you mean!
Pacmanpth
no, im talking about console games, xbox, ps2, etc, there is a 2-3 second delay due to the hardware encoder and it makes these games unplayable as it takes 2-3 seconds for stuff you do on your control to react on the screen
Super_Bob
er i was agreeing with you pacmanpth smile.gif i was confused as to what gabe was on about.
gabe
yeah i think im even a little confused here now wink.gif my vid card has inputs and i believe no hardware encoder its a radeon 9200 se, not the best ,but does what i need it to do. So i think if i can input into that. Thansk,
Gabe

There is a tweak that you can do to get rid of the time delay with these cards.

Enable Live Preview , bypass encoder for 0 delay

of course after i send mine back i find this sad.gif

KoS, you have the pvr-250 right? have you tried this how to see how it does with this fix, and if it does how does it compare to the n6 (i think you tole me you also had a n6)
KingOfSwords
I have not yet tried it. I will be rebuilding my htpc in the coming weeks and I will most certainly experiment with it.
