From what I understand, you would not need a TV Box with the Samsung LTM 1555x unit because it has a variety of inputs as well as a built in TV Tuner, however you would not have the benefit of line-doubling from standard TV sources. Is this correct?

What would generally be better, an HDTV unit with all of its standard features or a cheaper LCD and a Viewsonic N6? I really like the idea of increasing the quality of standard broadcast television.

I'm sure the 1555 actually scan converts too. I haven't found any specs on the built in conversion gear though, would be nice to know.

Pros and Cons to each.

LCD and an external box would allow you to upgrade one at a time without as much money out of pocket. Also, if one component fails, then you can easily replace it.

The Samsung is more convenient as most common inputs are already there so no need for external box.

Not sure about the LTM 1555X but the Samsung LT 1565 specs say - Line doubling: No

Really? Now that's unbelievable that it would accept the inputs and not upscan. Tryn says the composite looks great so how can this be? If that is the case then get the scan converter.

Here is a PDF Manual for the LTM 1555 - it's about 4 mb in size.

Found this about the 1565:

QUOTE
Since this TV supports progressive scan video, you probably will want to have a progressive scan DVD player connected to it. This will produce a relatively more "flicker-free" picture, compared to what is produced with conventional DVD players and TVs.

Rorshach, I have been looking for where the LTN1565 says no line doubling and can't find it. Can you please specify where you fould this so I can come to a conclusion to whether or not I continue my 1565 purchase.

Thanks
Rorshach
Oops, sorry. I didn't find it in the manual, but found it on a resellers page in the technical info. Now I can't find that link when I need it! Maybe contact the manufacturer to make certain?
Rorshach
This page lists the LTN1565 features and says:
QUOTE
1024 x 768 Pixel Resolution
High resolution pixel density with built in image scaler to handle inputs from a variety of digital or analog A/V or PC sources.

But it doesn't specifically say that the built in NTSC tuner is scaled? Maybe it is, but who knows for certain?

This page says:  Progressive Scan - No

Progressive Scan
Traditional TVs load the picture by first displaying the odd lines and then the even lines. Progressive scan loads the lines in order. This prevents gaps from appearing in the picture.
