Full Version: U.K Built Projectors

Let's face it; trying to build the lumenlab projector in the U.K is expensive and labourious in terms of ordering parts.

We already have lists of parts and suppliers which are incredibly useful but I have been watching these forums for a while and with the exception of Eyebaths project, I cannot be sure of any other finished U.K projectors.

So basically, I propose that if you are in the U.K just post a link to your projector PLOG or gallery thread, with a brief commentry of your experience. So other builders can get inspiration from the work you have done.

It may be an idea to leave discussion about individual projectors in the respective PLOG's or gallery threads, and keep this thread purely to list U.K made projectors, as we do already have a thread for U.K discussion.

Like so.

Project Log: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3116

Just some words on the status of my box, general ramblings.

I'm based in the West Midlands and I'm slowly progressing with my projector to the stage where I have half assembled the box, and am waiting on a FS mirror.

In terms of ordering problems, I have received one broken bulb which had to be returned. I never received an order from DBG builder group, so am chasing a refund.

But I have a Benq FP567s on my desk waiting to be took to bits. I have nearly sorted my screen, but that will follow in the PLOG.

There are definitely more UK projectors than just Eyebath's - I've had one up and running since just before Euro 2004. If others are anything like me, they've been spending all their time watching movies on a huge screen rather than sharing their results. Reading some recent posts about potential UK builders concerns I've been shamed into doing something to remedy that. I'll make a concerted effort to get something thrown together and get it posted this week.
For the moment though suffice to say that these things are genuinely impressive, the parts are easy to locate in the UK (although they do seem a little more costly than in the US), and they're straightforward to build - even the electrics. If you can wire a plug you should be laughing.

Right, bodged it all together without the proper tempered glass, worked, picture massive and clear. but a bit dark, i later discovered that this was down to my projection lens being nearly 10mm too low, my mistake. Will have to rectify. Pushed all other lenses lower and picture became alot brighter but I cannot leave it like this as there is undue pressure in the fcc's and no room for cooling circuit. No reflector as yet. Now everything is taken apart while I reset the projection lens and properly finish the job.

Lesson learnt, measure everything, check your plans, especially if you are going for your own dimensions, and measure them again, and once more to be sure.

No real problems ordering parts, total cost inc all those little trips to B&Q i would say going on £500

Critisisms:
MT400SX is hard to align as does not sit straight in the holder.
Box is heavy.
Projection ratio is not ideal, as dicussed elsewhere in this forum.

But ducking for cover for real while playing Call of Duty or Half life 2 is something I never expected.

Cheers. and Good luck

pics to follow once I get hold of a camera tongue.gif

ps I'll update this post as I progress to keep the one post per project concept.

Im from the uk, Cheltenham to be exact, and i am now just waiting for the lenses to arrive then i will be able to give it a test run.

Unfortunatly i dont have a camera and therefore have not put up and logs.

I am wondering if anyone knows where the best place to get some blackout cloth is and how much it costs.

Cheers

Dave

Cheltenham, that's just down the road from where I am, Stroud.

I will be building a projector, haven't bought any parts yet but will be in the new year (waiting for christmas to finish!) when I've got nailed down which parts to buy and help building the box from someone who does woodwork as a hobby.

Teh_Sting, could you reply in this thread where you got your bulb/ballast from? TFT, box, fans, lenses I practically got covered but where/what lighting setup to get is confusing. Thanks.
Eggonline
Im in South Wales & slowly Gathering stuff.
Its the Lenses & Fresnels Im waiting on. Cant afford to buy them this side of Chrismas! Bulb will be the final piece in the Jigsaw biggrin.gif
Gonna give it a Test Run & if it Works, Im going to Sell it & make a bigger one based on a 19" Screen.

I am from Goucester only two miles from cheltenham. got almost everything bar the montior. As iam an electrician the wiring side of thing should be a breeze. I got a 400w HQI light for my light sources, with that you get the lamp, ballast and the tempered all with the light fitting. Cost about £90.

I am from the south coast.Worthing to be exact, near brighton. I have lens kit en-route,a stripped Benq 567s monitor on top of my wardrobe! and am currently looking for a friendly local lighting specialist who wont mind me pestering him with 100's of really stupid questions. ph34r.gif

I'm gathering bits for my first projector. Being cheap to begin with and using a PSOne screen as my house isn't big enough to warrant a huge projector, and it has composite input which is good for the xbox.

So far thats all I got though. I can sort out the lighting as am fairly adept at wiring and electrocuting myself, but have a quick and no doubt stupid question. If I buy the lens for the 15" job can I cut it down to size indescriminately, or do I have to keep it around a central point?
pun15her
I am sure that it must be cut around the centre point.(I am no expert though) ph34r.gif And the focal point remains the same.
Teh_Sting
yeah, central point for sure

Guys, (or gals)

I dont wish to be a party pooper but...

This topic was opened as a list of purely UK built projectors for UK builders to post links to their Gallery and PLOGS. There is a UK discussion here (page 1) . I shouldnt even really post this but I thought I might try to salvage it cos it's a real good idea. Although we need to get some more on here!

Get the lenses from here... With the UV filter it cost me approx £60 including postage. ok its not cheap but you dont have to search around and they are the right ones.

Hi, Im just starting on my 'Canary' projector. Im based in manchester and i completly understand teh problem with sourcing parts. tis a nightmare i have managed to track down a Metal Halide at 400w with ballast designed for UK power sources. Glass has been a problem, as for lens i have given up, i have one or two possibilites with tracking down, second hand, projector lens but ill probably go for ordering in from the states..

Hi all.

Based in Brighton and starting the build in a few weeks time based on BenQ 15" and lighting and lenses from LL.
Dave
First pictures from my projector yesterday- picture is awesome without any tweaking and projected on to a white wall. Still sorting out a cooling problem (using a single PCAC bought from US at nexfan.com). The guide and forums have been a fantastic source of info. Didn't honestly think I could do it.

Also, good source for ballast + ignitor in UK is dealec.co.uk - helpful service & advice and haven't seen it mentioned in forums previously but good price and also have bulbs which appear suitable (I'd already ordered my oversized MH400sx/hor from eye lighting but would try dealec next time). Will post pictures if I can drag myself away from refining it and watching movies.

hi guys im still collecting parts at the moment i have the standard lens kit and a 15 " benq fp567s v2 monitor waiting for the lumenlab 240 volt light kit to come in to stock

Hi I just striped my benq567Sv2I followed your instruction, thank you very much for your help I don’t think I would have been able to stripe it with out you step by step instruction,
What I like to know is could I use the metal frame if I take off the (LCD glass and the light) and use the plastic frame, if I cut the excess plastic sticking out and match it with the metal frame and spray the matel frame black so it don’t reflect, than make a grove and slide the whole thing in would it be possible , please let me know thanks

Ahh the Peli smile.gif last time I heard it was doing business it was being run by someone who was in my class at school! (Archway) One of my school friends went to uni near London so I visited for a weekend, from Stroud to Strood in one day wink.gif

Oh and my projector is in an (almost) finished state, use it quite a bit but still a few loose ends to tidy up, like a complete rebuild because I don't like the design of the thing and it gets too hot :\

Hi all,

I'm a new UK member (this is my first post) but I have spent quite a lot of hours on here reading and researching (most of those hours were spent reading all 67 pages of pun15hers PLOG (wow what a result, I was blown away by the results you got pun, i'm inspired)). I definately intend on building my own projector in the near future, I am unsure about the design and components yet and nothings been bought but already I am excited by the prospect. My room is quite small so a small projector is a must really. Ideally I think I would go for a 15.4" widescreen WUXGA screen but these seem quite expensive (if only we could sort out an inexpensive controller so we could use WUXGA laptop screens, surely the signals to drive a panel are standardised to a degree?). Alternatively I've been thinking of using a screen out of a portable dvd player. I havent saw anyone using one of these on here which makes me believe there could be problems. If these could be overcome it could make a fairly small dvd only projector.

Anyways I've a lot more to read and learn but I know I can rely on everyone here to help if (when) I need it. Can't wait to start, will post a PLOG when I do.

Mark.

P.S I'm from Northern Ireland, anyone else from here??

Greeting, peeps.
Another one here from London, UK about to start building once things start to arrive.
I'm afraid I'm going to get impatient and buy things at ridiculous prices, simply so I get them faster.

I just sent a deposit to Johnzo for the 10.6" Samsung group buy thing. With a bit of luck, it'll arrive in a couple of weeks.

Will start a plog soon.

I've just started building my projector after collecting most of the parts. I live in Leicester and go to university in Manchester but resorted to sourcing most of my projector supplies from Germany.
