Full Version: Buying a 15" LCD. Again. Argh

Well, if you check here you'll see one of my posts detailing how I ripped the FFC on my Liquidvideo 15". I've tried to fix the monitor, but the solder points are insanely close together and I'm just not that good. So basically, after avoiding this project for over a month, I've decided to buck up and throw down some cash for a new LCD. Should I get out of the following:

Mag 456
LG 1515s
BenQ FP531 - $240 at Newegg (has a 25ms response time though)
Benq 557sV2 - $255 at TigerDirect (ugh...)
Benq 567S V2 - $275 at Newegg ($265 at TigerDirect)
CMV CT-522A 15"
Liquid Video E15LCD1 - $199 at Circuit City after Rebate

Basically, I just want things to work. I want to buy the LCD, not have anymore problems, drop it in and watch movies. At the moment I'm leaning towards the Benq 557sV2 for $255 (after shipping) from TigerDirect, although I hear they're a horrible company.) Then again, what about the FP531? Does the 25ms response time make a big difference? (I'd like to hook up this projector to my Xbox in the future as well.) And what about ordering from TigerDirect? Have they cleaned up their act lately?

Since I just ate the $190 for my old LCD, I don't want to spend any more money on the LCD than I have to, but if I have another FFC tear again, I"m probably going to hurt myself. Thanks a lot guys.

Personally I would get the BenQ 567s V2 from Newegg. It may be a few dollars more, but I know that they are a great company to deal with. From what I have read on here the 567s v2 is a great monitor to strip, with no FFC issues. Good luck on your next try. smile.gif

Benq seems to be the most robust.

I just bought the BenQ 567 v2 from NewEgg. After the price difference in shipping, it was only $10 more at NewEgg then at TigerDirect. Also NewEgg lists a three year warranty and TigerDirect lists a one year warranty.

I have looked all over, and I cant find descriptions of HOW people are tearing the FFCs. I was wonder, how did you tear the FFCs sort of as a guide of what not to do when stripping down the LCD monitor?

Has anyone had experience with the dell E153FP, I saw it on the compatiblity list but I am curious if it is good for stripping down.

Well I just checked this thread:

Dithered vs. Non-Dithered

If I understand, ALL the Benq LCD's (BenQ FP531, 557sV2, 567S V2, etc.) are dithered. Which I understand is perfectly okay for DVD movies but what about some of the other cool stuff I want to view. Namely, Xbox games, PC games, WMVHD (hey those trailers are nice) and .TS transport streams of 720p and 1080i movies? How are those going to look if I buy a Benq?
krackato
bump. I hope someone can tell me what their experience is with a dithered panel and High Def content.

Check out this thread. http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1810 Arkay in particular seems to know what he's talking about in reguard to this issue.

I just picked up a samsung 512N .... (brain you might want to add that to the compatible list) ....

Incredibly easy to strip, and No FFC issue what so ever ....

I have noticed, that the later the model the LCD is, the more that are starting to become more common with FFC being straight in without a socket ....
krackato
Where did you get the Samsung 512n? The only place I could find it was at BestBuy.com here:

BestBuy.com - Samsung 512N

yeah best buy was it .....

they offer a rebate on it .... putting the price tags in the mid to upper $200 .... I think if you buy it online from their site its a little cheaper ....

anyway .... I had a slimage 710A before this monitor, and I accidently ripped the FFC, I dont know the specs on it ... but this samsung mops the floor with it ....

it is 16ms response time ..... with a CR of 450:1 .....plus it comes with some software to calibrate your image (various video set up screens) ...

It also has a nice Auto adjust mode, that actually auto adjusted to the best picture ....

I could not make the image any better looking by making adjustments to it after the auto adjust ....... So Im quite happy with this monitor .....

I also noted, that this monitor is sort of transperant when its off ... (I could see my hand through it on the other side, where in the older slimage 710A was completly dark .....Ive noticed alot of new LCDs being this way .....

Krackato: would you be interested in selling the broken LCD?
krackato
Yes I would like to sell the broken LCD. I'll go ahead and private message you. How much does a broken LCD generally sell for?

Have you checked out Costco. They have a generic with good specs (400:1, 250nit and a 16ms response), nice part is $200 price tag. Any experiences with this monitor?
psyantist
by the way, here is a link to their Costco
krackato
Wow, that looks like a nice monitor. I've got a costco close by. Might be interesting to check it out. Argh... but don't want anymore problems.

Actually, from the image it looks like it has the front controls of the Liquid Video I had.

I saw these two 15" LCD's at Amazon.com. They're both $189 with free shipping, but I can't find any info on them at LumenLab.com:

DCL DCL5B 15" LCD

Sceptre X5G-Komodo IV 15" LCD

Both have
# 1,024 x 768 native resolution, 0.264 mm dot pitch
# Wide 170-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles
# 250 nits of brightness, 400:1 contrast ratio, 16 ms response time

which makes me think they're the same monitor. Anyone used either of these? I might just make a new post.

Krack - Both those look like they would be good too. Just wonder if there will be any issues when you get them apart. I'm with you on not getting burned. May be smart to just spend the extra 70 bones and go with a proven BenQ. But if everyone did that we would never know if these are good. Oh well
