Has anybody attempted to build a photographic digital enlarger by converting a DIY projector kit?
The only commercially available digital enlarger costs upwards of USD 25,000 (made by De Vere) and is of course way too expensive for the average photo enthusiast.
I have a black and white enlarger made by Zone VI (now defunct) and would like to explore the possibility of using it as a digital enlarger by replacing the film/negative stage with an LCD screen and projecting light through it, thereby making it possible to print digital (inverted) images on to traditional b&w papers (wet process).
The projecting lens is not an issue, it can cover up to 5x7" area.
I would need an LCD panel that is:
- up to 5x7" (can also be 4x5" if resolution/image quality is better)
- highest possible resolution (XGA, or higher?)
- highest possible pixel quality
- highest possible contrast ratio
- low to moderate lumens output
- vibration free
- maximum possible edge to edge brightness and contrast consistency
- convenient method to connect to a computer and to feed a still image from that computer
- convenient method of adjusting image contrast and brightness, hopefully with reproducible results upon every repeat use.
- 220v operation is preferable (I live in Hong Kong)
If any of the members of this group have some suggestions, especially with the LCD panel requirement match, I would appreciate your input. I have read the beginners start page and understand the various aspects involved in making a DIY projector.
Many thanks.
