Hi, I'm tom. I'm gonig to build me a system capable of projecting an moving image onto big white screen or a wall.

I have a 14" OHP I got as a present a couple of years ago. I tested putting stripping my laptop screen & blasting it onto the wall. Cool. Broke that old laptop screen plus the PCB boards got in the way (due to a ffc - it's a laptop so you would get that and it was from the 90s)

So now, that I have money again I'm thinking I'm going to make a new projector that can just plug into my graphics card by using a stripped lcd (hey maybe ill slug it through an old KVM box).

but now for questions

I've checked in this database http://baseportal.com/cgi-bin/baseportal.p...=/Lumenlab/main and i like the look of Dell 1504FP - I don't understand the comments about the countries are trying to tell me.

Does this look like a good buy to you:

Do i need to worry about removing anti glare layers bla bla with my powerful OHP. I understand that ill have to raise the LCD off the OHP glass somewhat an use perhaps a 60-80mm PC fan to give a suitable airflow. Ill probably create some sort of robust wooden frame to secure the fan and LCD on, but ill do that after I got the basics working.

AND/OR

Should I go about creating my own light projecting source. I read in a post from 2001 on a similar forum about ultra bright white LEDs outputting 17 lumens. LEDs have come far and wondering if they're a good option. I would never really considered them. I've seen the picture of some peoples own projector projects and they use little 7" LCDs with there own box and lightsource - where do you get those little 7", 12" etc LCD from that I can just plug into a VGA cable... was is the resolution like?

Let me know what you think

Sometimes, an LCD manufacturer will switch panels in the middle of a production run - so it's never a guarantee that your monitor will have no FFC issues (unless you purchase a bare LCD panel/controller from a third-party vendor). That being said, ޣ25 shouldn't kill you if you find out you can't use it. A lot of us have killed LCDs that cost over $200 and then had to replace them.

Here's a PLOG showing a strip of a 1504FP monitor. Your mileage may vary.

You might run across a "quirk" when searching using Google, however. If you notice the thread looking "wonky" like this image, simply go up the the top right corner of the thread and click on Options and then Switch to: Standard.

Some of the third-party vendors mentioned above sell a 7" 720p capable LCD/controller kit. They are expensive, though. You can get a less expensive 10.6", 10.9" or 12.1" LCD/controller kit, too (try a Google image search: 12.1 LCD Pixelworks). There are also plenty of relatively inexpensive 15.4" or 15.6" LCD TVs available out there, as well - with all the video inputs you would ever need.

Don't ever worry about removing any anti-glare from the LCD. I would recommend reading about 5000 threads on anti-glare removal (after you've finished your projector) before attempting such a thing.

I, personally, don't think that LEDs are a good alternative for a metal halide lamp. For lamp recommendations, check out the Best Bulbs Chart.

I posted this in another thread a while ago:

A while back, I came across a website called "Tom's Hardware" that discussed using an OHP as a projector.
That was my first introduction to this type of a DIY project.

You can find the guide here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2004/11/13/sup...e_your_tv_for_/

It has detailed instructions and should answer almost any question you'd have.

You'll eventually want to switch to a MH bulb as the OHP bulbs only last about 75 hours. When you get to that point, you'll probably want to build your own box to house it.

Here's a link to an article on how to "Retrofit Your Overhead Projector" that you might find helpful.

The LL forum won't let you search using a three-letter word. I find it easier to use Google for searching the LL site.
