So I have a Dish network. I have a Vip622 HD DVR. And I wake up this morning and I hear this humming noise. Kinda sounds like when it updates its self. But it goes on for like 15 mins and usually only takes about 3 and It always does it at 3am and this was 7:30am. Also it wasn't displaying anything on the TV and it usually displays a screen saver on the TV.

So I reboot it and it starts working. Then about 10 mins later the image just drops and it starts making that noise again. The only light on the front that is on is TV1 green light. And that light blinks once in awhile. So I reboot again and nothing. I have tried rebooting it about 10 times. Letting it sit for a few mins to maybe cool down or something. Nothing.

Any ideas? Is my receiver fried? Is there anyway to actually trouble shoot it?

Also the hard drive was pretty full but it had been pretty full for about a year with no issues.

Alittle update.

I unpluged it for about a hour. then pluged it back in. And it came up and ran for about 10 mins and crashed again. Then it came back up and ran for a few mins and crashed. Then it started coming up but crashing soon as it got picture back.

To me it seems to be overheating but I am unsure what I need to do to fix this issue. I would open the box and try and clean it out but then it might void the warranty.

I am unsure weather I have a warranty or not. I bought the box on ebay. So I am unsure weather warranties work on ebayed boxes or not.

1. Contact the manufacturer with the model and serial number. They'll tell you if you have a warranty, and what the proceedures there are.

2. Canned air through the ventilation can't hurt, and won't void a warranty.

3. Try keeping a fan pointing at it, and see if this helps the problem. It will at least identify if heat is the issue.

Many eBay sellers offerings are not warrantable, particularly those who are selling things that they bought for their own use, but the manufacturers will SOMETIMES offer whatever factory warranty the item came with. Unless the eBay seller specifically outlines warranty terms, assume that there's none. (Most will guarantee that it's not DOA, but as soon as it works, that's it.)

Well I unpluged it for about 4 hours. And It came up and ran. For around 2hrs then crashed again. Has anyone else had trouble with a receiver overheating?

disclaimer: I used to work Tech Support for Dish. Its been over 2 years since I worked there, so their policies may have changed, but I doubt it.

If you are not the original owner (ie, you did not purchase it from Dish) then the "factory" warranty is no longer valid. However, if you add the monthly Protection Plan, it will cover the receiver, as long as you have not done anything to violate it (open the case, etc).

Hint: when I was there, the Protection plan could be added or removed at anytime - meaning you could add the plan on Monday morning, call that afternoon to get the receiver replaced, get your replacement receiver on Friday, remove the plan on Saturday, and all you would pay for would be a couple of bucks pro-rated fee for a partial-month service.

How do they know if you open the case? There is no break strip on the case.

Good question. Chances are, they won't... In fact, I opened my case on a monthly basis and they didn't call me on it (being an employee might have had something to do with it, though). However every once in a while, you get a smart technician. Are the case screws stripped or paint missing from them?

People used to ask me if they could open their case to blow the dust out. The "official" answer was "no, that would violate the warranty under 'customer damage'" I once had a customer respond "if the receiver dies due to too much dust, isn't that possibly 'customer damage'?" and the answer is, yes, it is. Understand that the factory warranty covered the original purchaser only, and the protection plan has its limits. I'd still recommend it, though.

I do not see any paint on the screws. Looks clean to me. I took the case off inhopes it would add alittle more air flow. It seems to run longer but still dies. Has not been able to make it threw a full recording without dieing on me. Id like to clean the fan but then id half to remove the void warantee sticker.

Is there anyway to check the internal tempature of the unit?

Well I wired up a computer case fan and put it on the side of the HD. And so far 30 mins of run time and no crash but that doesnt mean anything. I am just hoping to keep it running till I can get a replacement.

I am really suprised but the fan inside the case only runs when it crashes. Does not run when its working. So it waits till it overheats to kick the fan on. Its either a glitch or its a bad design if you ask me.

Well It ended up running for about 4-5 hours b4 crashing with the fan on it. I let it sit all night and it came on in the morning. But I turned it back off because I was headed to work. I am going to turn it back on around 7:30 to try and catch afew of my shows that start around 10pm.
