I have been looking for replacement speakers for my (speakers?), the cones are ripped to the point that they simply emit a rustling paper sound. Anyways, the speakers in question are Radian Research 12-3's. I have a set of 2. I need help finding the speakers I need. Could you inform me if the following would work? I set up links to the website I would purchase from. HELP!

Woofer
Midrange
Tweeter

I am not really gonna be a snob about it, I just need something that will make it as close the the original as possible (preferably with a small price tag).

I can solder, so all I need is somebody to shove speakers in my face....
Once again, sorry for being new, and my aweful grammer....

Sorry for double post, I just thought I would get the attention of anybody who knows anything about this, and just doesn't care.

Not that this would make you care more, but this is a project for my dad. He bought these speakers when he got his first job, and when my sister and I were little, we accidently broke most of the speaker cones. I'm doing this for him, hoping it would make his day, or something. So if somebody could figure it out, I would owe you the world.

You can buy replacement surround kits for woofers. With some care and attention, you might be able to repair the existing speakers, which would be even better than replacement elements. A lot of the old stuff in speakers was extremely good, and better than much of what is available today.

I had a pair of Radian's a long time ago. They were stellar ( for the money) speakers. The thing you have to make sure of is that if you repair the woofer, that you have a transparent ( to air) cap on it. RR's main line in the early 80's was designed for free resonance and NEEDED to be able to breath through the center cone apeture. It was their method for improved cooling. If you can find it, you can replace the surrounds. Try partsexpress.com for the surround repair kits.

The mid and tweeter, you are going to have to extract and write down the values. Call parts express and they will be happy to help you match them as closely as you can. There may even be someone there who knows an ideal combination for replacement.

Good luck and post some pictures.

HAHA! I had a VERY similar setup growing up. My father (a VERY big AudioPhile) built them for me. He had hand built his system using $500+ drivers, and I always bugged him to build me one. So one day he used discount drivers just like these (if not these). It sounded not to bad. I think I had that exact woofer and mid range. I had different tweeters how-ever, I think they were plastic domes (but look just like yours).

It wasnt too bad of system. The woofers had some issues going really low, but could play rock music quite nicely, I think this was due to it being ported. I had mine in a box about ~3cu/ft with a 4" port 14in long (if I remember right). If I had to guess I think the port was tuned to about 50-60Hz. I ended up blowing them over time due to the 200watt/ch amp I was using. I would crank it up just below the point the amp would go into protection, and listened to music for hours. Yeah they didnt like that. (Hey I was 13, who respects equipment at that age?)

I will say get an amp 200watt-300watt/ch. They handle the high/brief power pretty good, just not long sustained high powers. But you will need some of that extra power to get the dynamics out of the woofer.

If you need, I think I still have my cross overs laying around somewhere from that system. I might be able to get values, or if your interested I'll sell them cheap.

P.S. - I would stay away from the sealed backed mids (unless your using it all in the same enclosure) You wont get the range you'd want from those. Just my $0.02

Ok, so I just sent my Receiver into a GREAT shop guy that is local to have the right channel fixed. (I tried to hook up some bose speakers to the Receiver for for a quick fix to listen to music out in the garage, and I found that the right channel was broken. Upon closer inspection i found that I had a good speaker plugged into a bad channel.)

The good speaker, it turns out, works perfectly (just has major cosmetic flaws with the cones, who cares?)
The other speaker (the one that was on the good channel {left}), is the only broken one. so I only need one set of replacement speakers for the speaker cabinet. I would prefer to replace them, rather than try to repair the actual speakers.

sorry about my lingo, the whole thing is just getting me so confused. I will post pics of the Cabs, just because apparently they are on the rare-side of the audio world.

It would be better (IMO) to repair the existing drivers than to replace them. If you replace one element, you really should replace it's partner in the other side.

This is it... ripped apart. damages to the cones are from about 15 years ago.

Yeah I'd say go ahead and replace. The drivers you have picked out look like they can work well in the boxes. You might have to do a little fiddling with the Xovers to tune it just right (if you care about that). But looking at the state of your current drivers, I'd say replace them all. You'll notice a BIG improvement just for doing that....

I have a set of Radian Research 12-3 that I can part with. The foam surrounds on the woofers are shot & cabinets are rough. Drop me a note if you are interested.
