Full Version: What kind of car person are you?

Just came across a question asked on Yahoo Answers about people fighting over which type of car is better than the others. But that made me think. There isnt one better car than another. It's all about the drivers choice. If you wish you have a smooth ride, comfortable seating, and not to feel rushed while driving then a luxury car would be you. If you'd rather rumble down the street, and be able to pull away from most cars then it would most likely be a muscle car. But it's all about what you like, not what others like.

My personal opinion would be performance imports. I love to see engineering go into a car. Someone willing to make a car as fast and as light as possible. I dont need to drive a 15 foot car around with a 5.0L V8 that only makes 220HP that weighs 3800lbs. I'd be more than happy with a small sub 2500lbs AWD car that can really put some power to the ground, and can do more than speed away in a straight line. I know some people will say "why have all this power if your bound by the same speed limit as everyone else". Well I can be sure that almost everyone here (if they will admit it for not) has at some point put there foot to the floor for any odd reason and wished they had a little more uhmph to pass a car, or what ever.

Me? Drive fast? Uh... No, Officer, I NEVER do that...

Yes, it takes all kinds.

My personal choice in the car I drive isn't for everyone. Not everyone has the time and patience to keep a 20+ year old sports car on the road, let alonedo they want to make the effort at turning it into something faster than it was from day one.

Granted, in stock trim the 220hp/3800 lb comment isn't far from the specs that my car left the factory floor with, but even then, it certainly did more than "go in a straight line"

Yes, I'm constrained by the same speed limits as everyone else, and day-to-day driving, I pretty much keep the turbo from spooling up at all, but day-to-day driving isn't all that I do, or want to do. Even then, a car that is responsive and fun to drive is important to me. I get in my car and drive to unwind, and to have fun.

If money weren't an object, I'd probably STILL modify a vehicle, though I'd start with something that was faster and more agile from the start. Alas, money is ALWAYS an object

Still, different people need different things from a car. Someone who wants great mileage, and only uses a car for urban commuting might be happy with a Smart car, or even possibly an EV. That's not going to be so great for someone who lives out of town and has 4 kids to shuttle around all the time, that person is probably going to want a minivan, if not a full-size van. A farmer who has to be able to get to the back 40 might have a legitimate need of 4wd, and even without, probably would make good use of a pickup truck. Someone (like me) who makes lots of long highway trips will want a comfortable ride, and a car that handles highway speeds very well. A grand touring type car will suit that person well.

If I had to buy a new car tomorrow, I'd be looking for something that fits in that "grand touring" category, most likely. I'd like performance, of course, both accelleration and handling, but at the end of the day, it has to be a car that I can spend a lot of time in. (I've put on over 400,000 kilometers on my odometer since 1996. I spend a lot of time in my car.)

Yep, takes all kinds. I work from home, so most of my trips involve either short trips out to dinner and the movies or really long trips to see friends and relatives. The "man" is a factor where I live, with one main highway through town, and they just love to hand out autographs, so I have to be careful.

After many, many years of buying the car I "should" buy, last month I bought the car I loved, and remembered what it was like to truly feel the road and enjoy the act of driving. I am definitely a roadster guy now. I <3 my Sky.

My car should be nimble, able to get out of it's own way and proven in performance. I will gladly sacrifice a little luxury for a bteer suspensiuon and few more ponies. The easiest way to survive an accident is not to get into one. wink.gif

I just rented a small import for the week (KIA) and I must say that little 4 banger was fun to drive. Nimble and accellerated quite nicely compared to my domestic suv. As I'd like to be in Jay Leno's shoes picking a vehicle for a day or even for the hour I'm more of a truck type person preferrably by way of 4x4 and moderately lifted with seating for 5. Having a bed to throw things in for any occassion comes in really handy.

No it does not take all kinds, it takes one kinds - a "car guy".
In my younger days my grandfather and I where chatting and - I started in with the the typical " this car vs that car" He stopped me in mid sentence and said " They are all the same - they get you from point a to point b"

Now for me I would agree just going in a straight line as fast as possible is a bit limited however a whole industry that creates a massive amount of cash flow has sprung up from it, and there are things to learn from all aspects of racing. I would love to get into amateur ssca some day, as I'm more concerned with how a car handle a road course - and by proxy - the road.

http://microsite.chevrolet.com/allnewcamar...-car-comparison

its a hard call between the Camaro SS or a Mustang GT, which is purely a stylistic / comfort choice for me however I must admit I'm digging the independent rear setup of the Camaro. Though when I have the cash Im geting a 70's Vett again (I had a 78 and loved it), the wife wants an Audi for daily and a 67 Vette for well- just to drive.

I've put the pedal to and through the floor at various times, and you cant beat the feeling as you feel the body of the car suck down to the road, settle in and just go. If you haven't felt that - your in the wrong car for those speeds. This public service announcement was brought to you by the letters G, T and the number 1.

I however love me some mud, and trails so for me its a Jeep(ish) vehicle. I have done this in stock and modified mud trucks, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeeps, FJ ect - even a 4x subi wagon.. that was a blast. Though I love a good mud bog, I actually prefer a trail crawl with obstacles etc.

Now - and this wasn't mentioned yet - I grew up on 2 wheels, a 47 Indian Chief, Motoguzi, Triumph choppers, etc etc and a number of Harleys to boot. The wife has caught the bug as well and wants a 883 hugger to cut her teeth on.

Point A to point B

SupraGuy
SSCA? You mean SCCA, right? (Sports Car Club of America) It doesn't take much to get into the solo events there, you've just got to look a bit. The autocross events are a lot of fun (Though my car is very poorly suited to them, I have fun anyways.)

I drive a stock 04 Civic, and I think I'm in the minority of guys my age, because I'm happy with it's 117 horsepower. Crazy right? But the horsepower to weight ratio means (driving a little aggressively) I beat almost everyone at the lights, and I get roughly 32 miles to the gallon and pollute less than everyone else. Being pretty low to the ground and having decent tires I can corner well and it doesn't feel sloppy while making quick lane changes, like all the SUVs and larger "trucks" I've driven do. I don't move a lot in my car, and the times when I had to move, I just rented a moving trucks which are more useful anyway, and cost about $100, which I easily save in gas money several times a year over a "truck" driver.

BTW I put "trucks" in quotes, because I live in the USA but I'm Australian, so I know that "trucks" aren't Trucks, because they aren't driven by "truckers", don't have more than 2 axles, etc etc. American testosterone is hilarious. The only thing more funny than the fact that "real men drive trucks" are the guys who raise them (increase the height you have to lift cargo), and the guys who lower them (decreasing weight limits by shortening suspension). Both mods make the thing less truck-like.

0-60 in 3.5 and 91 mpg!
wheres the catch??? ohmy.gif

AustynSN
The catch(es) are it's one of a kind concept car/prototype. They probably won't be making any more and thus the cost is undoubtedly such that the combined lifetime income of everybody whose ever posted on these boards wouldn't even cover the down payment. (Not that anybody buying that kind of car would ever lease a vehicle, mind you.)
SupraGuy
@Chris: Nothing wrong with that. A stock economy car is a perfectly valid choice, and for most people in general is a good choice. While it's not for me, I would certainly not mind driving a stock Civic around day to day, and leave the Supra for the weekends and fairweather days. Oh, and to your comment on "trucks" -- You can add (IMO) a few other things to the list of modifications to trucks that make no sense: Huge rims with low profile tires, which make the 4WD truck useless for off-highway use. Spoilers. (WTF?!) I mean seriously guys, if you wanted a sports car, buy a sports car. These days, it's even cheaper than the pickup truck is!

Yeah, there's a lot of things that can be done to get both economy and performance in a car, so it CAN be done, but can it be done in a production environment inexpensively? Not so much.
samuraijack
It truly does take all kinds. I have had my run with sporty cars, stocks and modded. Eventually I needed to trade the constant tinkering in and concentrate on things like my wife and kids. But that doesnt mean I dont miss it. These days I need a car that will always get me to work, even when others are immobile. So far, the VUE I have has been great. Its a light AWD with a Honda 6 in it that can jump out of a lot of thing's ways. It can handle children, single people, dogs and even plywood. The mileage is actually pretty good. I get about 23-24 around town.

Its like a Swiss Army Knife of cars.

Point is, everyone has their needs for a car and that car (hopefully) reflects the actual needs of the person that owns it. If not, then they will be unhappy.
