Full Version: Working with what I have on hand DIY screen?

IÃ×e just joined up to the site, while looking at various other sites for more information in the DIY sector.

I found this thread interesting and I had bed sheet in mind as temporary screen to size up before committing to higher grade of fabric. Stewart SMX are dreaming on cloud 9+ with silly over the top prices in non-profit domain called home cinema/theatre where the owner doesnÃÕ make profit where cinema does.

Screen

So like I stated above this is a (temporary screen). IÃÍl be looking into fabrics this week while taking along some screen samples and comparing to brightness also the grade of fabric is important also.

The bed sheet is slightly muted but at least the image is as large than it was before many times over and transparent with the matching LCR five speakers behind the screen makes it more than idea over most expensive items out there!

I see that blackout might seem a likely candidate thou IÃÅ have to look at it first hand and the square meter size cost because some fabrics can be just as costly for 100 inches or under.

From what IÃ×e seen with tiddler DIY I must say very impressed indeed because I believe it can be done on tightly restricted budget and my budget falls into that category after spending Ž£200 pounds on second hand Hitachi CP-X430 XGA LCD video projector with new bulb fitted and now IÃÎ looking at the next few of many steps to accomplish the final stages of the illusion.

Lacing

I knew it was on the tip of my tongue! I’ll look into fabric store shop and ask if they can’t attach some to screen once I’ve got the money and have decided on the type of material fabric that’s going to do the task.

This way I can tighten out any creases for flat possible screen area for projection.

Masking?

One thing IÃÎ stuck on is (small motors) for masking technique and thou I may have to looking into simple things like curtains how it factions opening the sides up at the same time thereÃÔ the top portion that needs to work as well at masking off any unnecessary black boarder bars.

Lens?

Now IÃ×e seen some DIY make you own anamorphic lens which seems simple unless youÃ×e made one before?
The bending of light with prisms I have small tiny one that I took out of one of accessories that attaches to the telescope to experiment with.

So I might look into that at some later point thou I wondering if I could get away with cheap second hand cinema anamorphic lens having worked in cinema many, many years ago thou the narrow end of the lens maybe to small or tricky as well as the weight of the lens itself.

Screens again

Now IÃÎ not sure if I want to go with scope like screen or just 4:3 because an IMAX DVD looks neat thou I canÃÕ get the image to fill the whole size of the bed sheet LOL.

ItÃÔ larger than the widescreen CRT TV so now then!

Fan Isolation!

Now the projector does have noisy fan donÃÕ they all and if you ever been in projector booth its really noisy with motors turning on the projector and the film making clicking sound as it passes though the film gate.
The extractor sucking the heat from the lamp house and the lamp house humming of the rectifier also adding to the noise?

So since the video projector is in the living room at present I was thinking why not approach in the same way as cinema? IÃÅ have to knock a small hole into the wall only just big enough for small cheap picture frame that IÃÅ attach fixed on both sides of the 4 inch wall.

Its mostly plasterboard and gap in-between I hope or maybe a few hours careful work. The picture frame canÃÕ be no bigger than 12 inches square as I donÃÕ want an unsightly looking glass or plastic hole in the wall!

The projector will be fixed on the wall in the kitchen mounted high up so to clear the seating elevation height as my hair tends to get in the way LOL and I have to crotch down while doing the itching dragon at the same time LOL.

So at least 7 feet up it should be spot on the money.

This isnÃÕ going to happen overnight as I have other issues to get out of the way first so IÃÅ expect start time around (late July to August 2009) by which time, I can buy some really cheap off the shelf items and start the DIY project.

So basically IÃÍl be working with what is on hand to build the screen.

I’ve been looking into a what tradeoffs I get with the picture frame that I have that holds Star Trek generation 35mm film cells. LOL I thought hmm why not play a few extracts from it on DVD and see what will happen if the plastic is placed in front of the lens?

Well it kinder lowered the light level so I might have to find a cheap one that has glass and then try it again to see how much trade-off there is with it.

Other than it the refection from it was making my cat curious as he sees the light bending around the walls LOL.

The phone camera is charging up at the moment so I can’t use that to take a clear picture in the dark, and my regular camera doesn’t see that well under low light conditions as I was going to take picture with and without the plastic glass frame while the image is on the bed sheet.

Maybe later on when its fully charged up.

Thanks:)

Well that was a rather exhausting look around at three different fabric store shops while comparing the silly over the top cloud 9+ dreamland prices of micro perforated screen with different translucent whites.

The first shop I visited was near too the white level but not close enough to what was needed.

The price was right nothing wrong with that.

The second store had a white like fabric along with nice shine to it not over the top shine just a nicer look to the bed sheet.

The price was right also!

The third and last shop was spot! I found what I want when I have bit of money spare for the required 1.50 metre by 60 inches at £2.35 (white lining) its not too transparent its just right and that’s what I’ll go for in the next few weeks.

I’ll post pictures of the samples I have later on as I just got in and need to rest before taking pictures and uploading.

It pays to shop around!

Also I brought couldn’t resist two small simple picture fames (glass) for the port hole windows at £1.89 each.

STOP THE PRESS!

Just got off the phone after another phone around and

HANKNESS SCREENS

Has convinced me to go with a rough price guess of £110 pounds for what I need thou I’d have to re measure the when the projector is in the kitchen for a new size as I need to be spot on!

But £110 for a rough 5 height by 100 inches is cool and micro super perforated. smile.gif

(MPS) Micro Super Perforated

All that stands in the way now are the sodden bills! I need to get those buggers out of my sodden way so I can start saving up and build my dream small home cinema to enjoy!

It’s incredible how Stewart screens change could 9+ silly prices for a non-profit home cinema! tumbs down! blink.gif

The fabrics as good as they are will have some slight minor imperfection thou the last type the (white lining) isn’t all that bad over the bed sheet its got minor threading!

Anyway just been speaking to a friend and I mentioned the wall the cut out for the projector and he said “no don’t do that!”

He thinks its something other than hollow as this is his field, you know what mean.

So he may have look at it and help me out since I’m going to help him out in his garden 150 feet! It needs cutting down to make it look nice, as its but rugged looking if you know what mean?

Well that’s that for today a new plan a new mission.
