Hello All,

I am new to this site, this is my first post.

I have a sony kdf60wf655 rear projection tv that has the infamous optical block failure.

The screen is covered in blue dots and blobs.

Has this issue ever been discussed at this site?

I have tried cleaning the OB 3 times now and only seem to be moving the dots around.

Thanks in advance.

The optical block problem hads been known about by Sony for over four years, yet they still kept the design. Some folks have gotten new TV's out of them. Some free and some for "bargain prices". The only solution to this is to take Sony head on and keep in mind that they deliberately sold you a KNOWN defective product. The cooling design was poor and the OB was too close to the light source.

If it's any consolation, Sony has been very responsive to legal issues that handle small claims etc.

BBB is useless. FTC might be helpful. Best bet is having your local service technician speak directly to Sony techs.

Get it fixed. Get Sony to pay for it. Then sell it...and get a Mitsu, Panny or Sammy. Or if you still have faith in Sony, then take them up on their trade it with a model that doesnt have the problem. Believe me, Sony KNOWS about this problem.

You know the problem I see. Yes it is very frustrating spending 3500 bucks for a tv that lasts 3 years, then another 1100 bucks to fix every 18 months after that.

I have taken my optical block apart and tried to clean it. I beleive the problem lies in the dichroic filters. I think the dust burns onto the film because the block is too close to the heat (light) source.

Do any of you peeps know who manufactures these filters and where to buy them. I beleive we folks can repair these blocks ourselves instead of feeding the
monster 1100 bucks for the repair.

Removing the filters makes the blue blotches and dots dissapear but it throws the color off on the set

The trade in is the best way to go. You can upgrade your TV on the cheap. Many folks have upgraded to the 120Hz models that dont have the problems the others do.

there trade is no deal. They only discount from there inflated sony style web prices. You can find them for less than there discount from other sources.

Besides that I will not spend a dime on another Sony product, why another one when they will not stand behind the product I already have.

besides that the only 60 inch tv they make now is lcd and costs 25 thousand dollars, so they cannot even offer a similar replacement.

I asked for the discount in cash to buy a different make and they would not do it.

oh well karma's a bitch, even for a company. I haven't purchased a sony product since i spent 600 bucks on 5.1 surround system back in the day (6-7 years). the first thing i noticed was how clear evrything sounded when i first set it up.
Well.. 4 hrs and some nine inch nails and dr dre later, i noticed the woofer couldn't handle the low bass i was playing and made a "womphing" noise when it shoulda made a "boomph" noise.
But they'll pay. they already have the lowest selling system (ps3) and when they spent billions of money on advertising and movie format rights, they won the format war (blu ray) but even though they won, discs are no longer the preferred medium, and dvd sales are still strong in comparison.
So even though you may have lost some money at least they're losing waayyy more.

Thanks for your moral support.

I'm still looking for a source for the dichoric filters. If I can find the filters and it fixes the issue, I will generate a repair procedure and release it to the public.

Your local repair shop should be able to source the filters for you, but Sony has been componentizing their stuff so it may be that the filters are attached to a whole new unit.
I hear small claims court gets nice quick repsonses out of them...wink.gif

Local Sony authorised repair here is no good, in fact they are theives. They tried to get me to pay for a replacement lamp that was covered by warranty after Sony sent it to them for free. I caught them, then they refused to service my tv. Sony sent me another to my home and I changed it myself.

I found a guy from another forum who says he has bought replacemennt OB's for under 200 dollars. It does not include the fan or electronics board, they have to swapped from the original, but they do not want any parts back, you keep all the original parts from your OB.

I haven't got the info on the company yet but I will post it here when I do for anyone who is having the same issue.

Keeping the old parts might come in handy when it's time for Sony to pay the piper in court.
