I live in Canada.

UPS sucks for cross-border shipments. They charge an unreasonable amount for "brokerage" -- which basically amounts to someone punching in 5% (GST) on a calculator. It was something like $65 for an item worth less than $150. Utterly ridiculous.

Fedex is supposed to be a bit better, but really, my last experience with UPS rather put me off of couriers for a while.

USPS then transfers over to Canada Post. Canada Post has a policy that if it's under a certain declared value they don't bother even with GST. If it's over there's a flat rate fee ($10 last time I remember paying it) and GST on top of that, which really isn't too bad. Delivery time from the US seems to come in at about a week.

I did have the post office break an LCD panel. It took a long time to get the claim resolved, but it did eventually get resolved.

I had UPS lose a parcel on me once. That never did get resolved, and I was out $1800.

I've never had Fedex or DHL lose or damage a package on my yet, so I can't speak to their claims service.

Well, I chose USPS mainly because I haven't had a lot of luck with UPS and I will NEVER use Fed Ex again. Rather the re-tell the whole story, I might as well just post my letter of complaint:

We are still fighting the US Immigration Service, however the fight is almost over. My wife has an interview with the US Consulate in a couple of weeks and then we will finally be reunited as a family. Of course, as stated above, there was no one else I trusted but FedEx to deliver my package full of financial documents (that my wife needs to provide to the US Consulate at the interview). I sent this package on December 20th, 2005, at the Tulsa International center, 7181 S. Mingo, Tulsa OK, 74133. The agent at the counter was very nice and extremely helpful, exactly what I've come to expect from your company as a whole. I was given the option of International Economy, guaranteed to be delivered on December 27th, or and express delivery guaranteed to be delivered on December 23rd (both guarantees barring customs delays). Since my wife was going to be out of town on the 23rd but would be home on the 27th, I chose the Economy shipping. I paid $196.10 with the verbal understanding that I would be refunded if the package was not delivered as promised. Given my wonderful history with you company I had no reason to believe anything to the contrary.

Today is the 30th of December. The package has yet to be delivered. I have tracked the package through this website and see that it did spend 2 days in customs delay, but even then that should have put in on my wife's door yesterday. Naturally, I was very concerned, so I called you 1-800 # and spoke to an international representative. Who, while being a little curt, was in fact polite (again, I expected nothing less from your fine company). What concerns me is his insistence that, even though I was assured that this package would be delivered on the 27th, that rural Russia carried no such guarantees, because it says so, right on his computer. (he could provide me no written documentation to this, he only repeated "it says so right here on my computer") I was appalled. As you can imagine, this package means the difference between being a family again, or failing the interview and remaining apart because my wife did not have the proper documents. There was no one else I trusted in this, and I was told, in no uncertain terms, that my trust was misused, as I was promised a money-back guarantee that your company has no intention of honoring. That is very sad.

I offer no solutions, as I am not a FedEx employee. I am simply letting you know how your company won and lost the same client in less than a year. What you decide to do with this information is up to you.

The package never arrived in Bologoe. It got to Moscow and Fed-Ex called my wife, told her they would NOT deliver it to her in Bologoe and that if she wanted it she'd have to COME TO MOSCOW to get it (roughly 200 miles). I called Fed-Ex to see why and they told me that Bologoe was not a deliverable city. It was (and to this day still is) on their website as a deliverable city, it was also a deliverable city in their computer at the International center when I mailed it to begin with, not to mention that they had delivered there once before. The Fed-Ex agent "declined to comment" on those circumstances and refused to deliver the package as well as refused to refund any money...

I will NEVER, EVER use Fed-Ex again...

The method that johnzo used to ship my LCD Kit package to Canada - FedEx International Priority (Door-to-door, customs-cleared service)- made it to me without any additional brokerage or customs fees. It initially costs a little bit more than Ground, but it costs less in the long run.

Personally i'm a USPS (Priority Mail) and FedEx guy for domestic. USPS is nice as they also have Sat. delivery. FedEx always seems to have the lowest prices for their Home Delivery service, which IIRC, also has Sat. delivery (not sure if that has changed).

DHL for international. Never had trouble before... well... just don't try to send beer international and be honest about it... ninja.gif

Basically for any given carrier it all comes down to the person doing the delivery. I've only ever had issue with a UPS delivery guy, and that was two states and 12 years ago.

On topic: I think that any major courrier is going to have a few horror stories out there. Poor customer service, packages gone missing, getting damaged/destroyed... It's all a function of what happens once an orginasation gets large enough. However, there is one thing that they CAN do about it, and that's how the higher-ups deal with these incidents when they happen.

In the case of OKFlyboy's dealings with FedEx, the proof would be in how their head office responded to that letter. My cynical side says that it depends on where they saw themselves positioned in the market at the time that they received it. If they figured that they were on top of the pile, they'd likely ignore it. (So we lose one customer who's shipping stuff to some out-of-the-way place in Russia. So what? Besides, he'll be back.) If they say themselves as being in a good position to get to the top of the pile, they'd bend over backwards for each and every complaint letter, trying to keep every customer that they can. (He's bringing her here, that means that his future business will be more profitable!)

For my lost package with UPS I talked to several very friendly helpful and utterly ineffective customer service agents. Ultimately, I determined that it would likely cost me more in lost time to get something resembling satisfaction from them than the parcel's worth. (A low-to-medium level server.) I cut my losses and bought another one. I didn't want MY customer to suffer for their mistake.

Again, my cynical nature is just waiting for a similar incident with my current preffered carier (DHL)

I think it really depends on the actual area where the company is based. We have a depot in a nearby town and we seem to get very good service from Fed-EX. But they have a large presence here. UPS is here but not as large with DHL gone.
DHL had a HORRID reputation in our area. UPS was pretty much the same only we knew that when it wasnt Christmas season we would most likely get our stuff.
UPS has pulled some classic mistakes, including leaving a 5000 dollar sever drive array on someone else's doorstep without a signature.
That went over really well as they dropped it in February.
At least they tried to put a bag on it. wink.gif

So for the Vermont area, Fedex seems to be more reliable.

If I am seriously not in a hurry, I like the USPS too.

They ignored it. Never even got a canned response...

SJ: So it's not just me that's had that experience with UPS?

One of the "friendly and helpful -- but totally ineffective" customer service agents did manage to track down where my server got delivered to... No signature. Someone got a rather nice Christmas present in Toronto, Ontario. The server was supposed to be delivered to Vancouver, BC. Hey, they only missed the delivery area by about 2,100 miles... As far as I know, it stayed there...

UPS is nicknamed " Brown"...

Only one thing comes to mind when I see brown....
