Surfing around came across this little beauty..or should I say beast !
http://www.christiedigital.com/AMEN/Techno...ntroduction.htmBig 2kw up to 6kw xenons give it heaps 'o' Brightness....probably a little bright for the living room LOL

30,000 lumens, great.
2kW, not so much...
a 400W MH lamp will have between 32,000 and 40,000 initial lumens, with only 20% of the power requirements, which means less than 20% if the heat to deal with.

but, because of the huge arc of a 400W MH lamp you will only get a fraction of the light on the screen...

No, as long as you are good with teh placement of the fresnels, you can get the vast majority of that light onto the screen.
With my 15" standard lens projector, I might lose about 5% or so off of the ends of the arc which I don't get intot he triplet. With my pro lens projector, it's about the same, maybe a bit worse.
In both cases, I don't have 2kW worth of heat to dissipate, and I can feed the projector, sound system and a computer from one standard 15A household circuit. (15A X 115V = 1725W.)
I'll certainly grant that many people lose a lot of light because of the larger lamp arc, but with a good build, there should be no reason to lose much of that light at all.

thatīs why 400W MH lamps are so common in professional projectors

Well, they would be if commercial projectors also used 15-17" LCD, where the FL of the fresnels get longer and the arc magnification factor was lower.
The people who build and design commercial projectors get things that we as DIYers don't, such as purpose-built parts. They also have to build for any reasonable situation that their customers might want to use the unit for. We're building for ourselves. I know, for example, that my pro lens projector is never going to be used for a thow more than a couple of feet different from what it's doing now, so that's what it's optimised for. If I had to allow for any throw from 6' to 50' I'd have had to design differently, and the result would be that a smaller arc lamp would make that a lot easier.
You can go ahead and use that 2kW lamp, but by the time you've dealt with the cooling issues that 5 times the power dissipation is going to cost you, I'd put money on my 400W projector being brighter.

supra,
if you watch the vid on the link i think they are saying it delivers 30,000 ansi lumens, on the screen
not the bulb itself.
that 2kw xenon lamp is a MH lamp
we use the same terms for cars with HID systems or "xenon arc discharge" lamps
Ez
these are the sort of things they are doing with them, watch from abou 1/4 way in
worlds largest display

Okay, 30,000 ANSI lumens to the screen is a completely different animal.
I still figure that for DIY, this would be really difficult to keep cool enough. DLP is a lot more heat tolerant as well. I can't see any of the LCD monitors that we use being able to pass that much light without cooking, but as in many cases, I'd like to be shown wrong.

not unless you wanted daily visits from the fire brigade.
you could burn a hole through your house and your neighbors and still project into the house at the end of the road.
rekon they'd see you from space ?

Well, y'know, I've always JOKED that with the right FL lens you could project an image on the surface of the moon

New moon would be best, since you still couldn't compete with the sun

wouldnt that mean you'd need an lcd the size of......canada:ohnoes: ?
but seriously, we've put lasers up there, will be a matter of time till theres a bill board up there.

I still have 3 -2KW HQI lamps and a working ballast system if anyone is willing to try I could part with them at cost.
I did a quick test setup here.
http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?s...hl=arizonavideoPerhaps some day I will get to make a new PJ out of them.
