About a year ago I purchased this projector (http://www.viewsonic.com/products/projectors/pj503d.htm) It was cheap and a pretty decent projector. After about 6 months of etherape projection the bulb died and I needed to purchase a new bulb. With a new bulb being close to the price of a new projector I decided to see if I could source the bulb from the manufacture or build a better solution which is where I stumbled upon this site about a month ago.

I have seen allot of solid builds and the Fav Rio looks like a good solid projector with some decent cheap bulbs.

Well the other day I powered up my projector and took a flashlight a flashed it through the projector, just to make sure the projector was working fine. I got an image, but the flashlight I used got me thinking. It was a 800 lumen flashlight with a Cree LED module. Could it be possible to remove the ballast and replace it with a driver circuit and replace the bulb with an array of these high powered LED modules with a diffuser on top.

My thoughts were that I could easily and cheaply source the modules, and some "flashaholics" are building LED lights in the near 2000 lumen range, and bulb(LED) life would be better than any conventional bulb out there.

I have trolled the forums a bit, and I haven't found any real builds out there that touch on the topic of an LED projector. I would like to give this a serious go.

What are your thoughts?

Will the light be to splotchy, will LED's not throw the same amount of light as X type of bulb, will light color be an issue?

Ah, thank you, I forgot to use my google-fu prior to asking *facepalm*

Some of those builds look really good, I plan on using a 1-4 of these LED's, depending on the light that I need http://www.newark.com/bridgelux/bxra-c2000...rray/dp/45P5611

Can anyone recommend a good way to collimate the light into a nice straight beam.

yes, by buying the lenses i have and never used.

i have 2 sets of lenses. around ten total, an led driver, and a heatsink and heatsink compound ill sell for $20!

with the lenses you can get a 2-80 degree beam!

Hmm, I already have the heatsink, and I plan on building a custom driver myself as these LED's will need to be babied to get them to do exactly what I want them to. What type of lenses are they?
