Full Version: Win XP wireless connectivity problem...

My Win XP tower developed a problem where it would no longer boot up into Windows. Perhaps it was drastic, but I did a system restore. I finally got it to boot up into XP, and got my printer working again, but I am unable to connect to the internet using my Linksys wireless router. I have a Linksys 1394 wireless adapter that I use to hit the router with. The router itself is connected directly to my cable modem.
When I go into Device Manager, it tells me that the Wireless Network Adapter is working properly, yet there is no connectivity. I'm lost, thought I would bounce this off you guys! Thank you for any help...

First thing you want to try is to go into Device Manager and right click on the wireless adapter driver and uninstall. Make sure the adapter is unplugged and then reboot. When it comes back up, reinstall the driver and then reconnect the adapter. If that doesn't work...

Connect the computer directly to the router and try doing a Windows Update with the wireless adapter plugged in.

For further help, please provide the make and model of your computer.

I had a similar problem and amazingly got ahold of a knowlegeable, tenacious, and helpful (!!!) guy at Verizon. He tracked it down to the fact that my wireless router and DSL modem were in conflict. It boiled down to putting my DSL modem in bridge mode and I've not had the problem since . . . yet. laugh.gif I'm not savvy enough to provide you with more details but suffice it to say there is tantalizing similarity in your problem to what I experienced. I had no trouble for over a year but once things turned sour I just couldn't get my setup working again without assistance. Good luck!

I tried doing what you suggested, as far as uninstalling/reinstalling the driver. My system comes back at me with "cannot find drivers on this disk"
I'm lost!

Don't you have a CD that came with the router? Did you insert it? If it doesn't autorun, you can always open up My Computer and click on the Setup program.
Did you try going to the Linksys website and downloading the proper driver and then installing it? On another computer or through a LAN connection.

And, again, what make and model of computer do you have?

Quasi,
It is a Compaq Presario model no. SR1710NX.
In my fiddlings with this thing, I have gotten to the point where it now tells me there is no TCP/IP connection for my wireless router. I have not tried the network cable trick yet, so that is something else I might do. The wireless router is supposed to replace that cable, but I feel I could probably connect using a cable!

Sorry, I fried my brain looking for an answer for you.
