I was recently searching eBay to find some high power LEDs to build my own home lighting. I then stumbled upon these beauties.

All the LEDs of this caliber on eBay range between 6500lm and 7000lm, all are 100W. All are between $200 and $500 each. They seem to have a 140-160 degree output, and I have done some research, and supposedly you can buy lenses for these kinds of LEDs to focus the light, even collimating lenses which might be a bit extreme.

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this option, using a single, or possibly up to 4 extremely high power LEDs for backlighting?

here is an example

if all those 6500-7000lm can be directed through the lcd and toward the triplet, the picture should be pretty good (that's with 90-100% efficiency)

But I'm a little reserved about those numbers. 6500-7000lm is incredibly bright from a single LED, the brightest I've ever seen. The best I had ever seen before that were LED's from phlatlight technology that produce +4000lm from a single white LED at a cost of about $120 per LED http://www.luminus.com/content1463

7000lm is quite a bit more than that of phlatlight's LED's, and they're one of the leading developers, so that's why I have reservations about those claims of 7000lm.

But I hope that is the case - and I don't know if it possible to use 4 LED's efficiently. If one could use 4 x 7000lm LED's, that could be plenty bright (once again, if all light is used and not wasted.)

Nice find!

You might want to keep an eye on the Luxim thread and hope their prices become affordable.
