hey guys,

i've been doing car audio for a decade but want to start building a decent 7.1 system for my home system...

the thing is i'm on a budget, I don't want to spend more then $5-600 for all the speakers, tweeters, crossovers, binding posts, etc...the receiver is seperate, i'm going to get a onkyo 705 or something like that...

i know avsforum.com is a resource but i'd like to know if anyone know's other sites such as zaphaudio.com...I really like that web site but would like more ideas...

i just want to build a nice budget set of speakers that will sound great, and good plans are there for it...

anyone know any other good resources?

thanks in advance...

ofcourse partsexpress is one too...any others? any recommendations on a good book that doesn't get into the meta theories that only a acoustic engineerer would read ?

I've got a few designs posted on my site:

The TriTrix variations (sealed, vented, TL's, MTM and MT versions) enjoy a good following and should nicely fit into your budget. For other builders opinions, ask or search for them on the PE board... http://techtalk.parts-express.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2

I second the parts express DIY section. in particular the designs from Wayne J, ala Speakerbuilder.net. he's got a design for budget surround sound that I have personnally built, and with my (admittedly somewhat limited) experience in speaker building, sound pretty good. if you don't go with real fancy exteriors the surround speakers can be had for around $50 a piece, leaving plenty of budget left for a subwoofer.

I found an older article on the internet the other day (can't find the original source anymore), but I saved it to my computer luckily. It goes into some important design criteria for designing your own speakers. It gets pretty involved the further you go into the article, but I would recommend that anyone building their own speakers at least read Part 1. There are some good rules of thumb to follow that I haven't heard about in my previous readings.

(I am hosting it on my home server, so I suggest you save the file for future use because who knows if my server will be up)
You can download it here (~3.5mb).

If your into Super HQ speaker systems with ALOT of design and engineering behind them, goto www.zaphaudio.com. This guy really knows his stuff, and really explains things well. He even has a few "desktop speaker" DIY tutorials on there worth looking at. I used his "small driver comparison" to help pick a suitable driver for my line arrays (to come).
