Hi all,

I'm thinking of purchasing a Favi LCD projector and was wondering what the quality is like? I will mostly be using it to watch videos on my computer and DVDs and maybe some TV.

Do you recommend I buy one? The big attraction to me is the price (particularly the price of replacement lamps).

Favi 1500 LCD Projector - $449.95

Favi Rio HD 1200 Lumen LCD Projector - $599.95

Has anyone bought one of these projectors? Do you have some photos on the quality of the projection?

And lastly, can these projectors be used in an outdoor setting?

Thanks heaps!
Will

Thanks for your reply OKflyboy. I notice a lot of the information on these forums regarding these kinds of projectors is outdated now. I was wondering if anyone had purchased a projector recently?

There are also other projectors mentioned on these forums (OX Pro series, ZonQ etc...). Are there any screenshots available for any of these projectors so that I can check out the picture quality?

This projector looks interesting and the bulb replacement is cheaper than most. However; I don't think this can do true HD as the native res on the unit is too low: 640 x 480. It says it has some special chip that increases res and clarity, but I don't care what fancy mumbo jumbo you add you can only squeeze so much out of a lemon. rolleyes.gif

I'm not too concerned as to whether or not the projector can do true high definition. I'm more concerned that it is decent enough to pass as a non-HD projector in terms of brightness and clarity.

Would it be as good as the eVo projector for instance?

Most members here are probably of the opinion that the Favi projectors are garbage. Buy one if you wish.
Keep in mind, though, that god kills a kitten every time somebody buys a Favi.

Thanks Quasi_Mojo. If the Favi projectors are lemons what projector (if any) would you recommend buying as a good alternative now that the eVo isn't sold anymore? huh.gif

It seems all of the other 'commercial' projectors have replacement bulbs that cost hundreds of dollars to replace. glare.gif

That's why we choose to build our own. Cheap Lamps / Upgradable / Relatively Inexpensive 720p or 1080p.
If you go with a small panel (10.9" LCD or less), you can keep the enclosure under 24" long.
My enclosure is just over 25" long (12.1" LCD), and it'll look pretty sweet - if I ever finish it.

And for those who dont want to wait 4 months to find time like yourself to finish a projector project but want a decent projector (not the best by any means) that will take cheaper bulbs?

Decent projectors with affordable bulbs -- depending on your definition of affordable -- generally do not exist.

I've been using my projector since mid-April and it works great. That's my problem with finishing it. I've gotten to the point where it works and, because it works, I've grown too lazy to finish it. I use it for about 6 hours a night, every night. If I were to build it again, and could dedicate myself to a time line, it probably wouldn't take more than a month to build it.
And I've been running it without any fan, as well. 'Course, I wouldn't recommend it.

No fans. Liquid cooling?

wm., SuntoryTimes might be able to discuss the pros and cons of owning the Favi (but he might be a little biased wink.gif)
He's got his up for sale in the Trading Post: FS: Favi 1040 + 3 bulbs, chance to buy a great projector

kieranmullen, the way my projector stays cool (currently), to the best of my knowledge, is that cool air enters from the bottom, passes between the LCD and rear fresnel, over the top of the rear fresnel and out the back of the enclosure. A few of the things that might help my projector stay cool is the fact that I'm currently only using a 150W lamp, I have a simplified air path (only one bend) and the fact that I have a basement apartment. It does stay pretty cool down here, year round. I usually wear a fleece "jacket" throughout the year, while inside.

For specifics of my build, check my PLOG link, below.
