Hi everybody,

First of all thanks to all, in this forum who have contributed so much info in here, which gave me enough impetus to start this project.
It all started with a youtube video demonstrating how to use a OHP with a LCD to make a projector. And then my research brought me here.
Since this is an experiment, i hunted for second hand goods.I got one OHP for Rs 3000/- (3M 9080), but i though it was expensive(with regards to its quality) so i dropped the idea and finally decided to make a Projector from scratch. I stay alone in Bangalore and planning to take up the actual build when i go home (Jamshedpur) on 25 Oct.Coz i need tools and everything.

I wanted to save money so I thought to try and get all the materials from India itself. The Optics part was hard to find. I had to surf other site like diyaudio.com to hunt for it. Finally now i know where to buy, and almost decided what all components will i take.

Today i got the first and one of the most important components. The LCD. I had found a shop which sells and buys second hand computer parts.
I got this 15" LCD for Rs 2500/- ($ 55 approx). This is a LCD module, with no cabinet or cover. It is for fitting in kiosk and vending machines.

The vendor didnt know that it also had a touch panel along with it
. The only part missing is the plug for 12v power input.

Note: The image shows the LCD in the condition i got it in.
Arrows show (from top to bottom):
  • Touch controller
  • Wire feed to the front glass panel
  • The USB cable to connect the controller to the PC
  • The 12V power cable.(its plug is ripped off, so i cant test the touch panel)

I was very excited to see this touch panel and will be trying to make it work sometime later.
As of now i have to check that this LCD can be used in projector or not. That is, FFC cable is long enough or not.

Next course of action: open the panel and find the FFC cable.

When i lifted this up i saw that there where these plastic connectors which were not connected to anything.

Looking it from this side, we can see that there is nothing which was or can be attached to this.
And i can find no place where these connection were connected. not even any gap from where these cud have gone inside some where.

Guys please help me and tell me what to do.
I tried to assemble it back. and then connected it again, but i cud just see this.and the monitor is not getting detected.

Please answer my question.

1. If one side out of the two side connections is ripped off, will i be able to see this(above)?
2. If i have actually ripped it off, can i get it repaired?

No, you did not rip them off. Some LCD panels have these flat flexible cables (FFC) on the side. In most cases, there are not connected to printed circuit boards (PCB).
When you finish disassembling the LCD, you might want to convert the plastic and metal frame so that you can re-use it. It will help protect the panel - especially those FFCs on the side.

Thanks a lot Quasi for ur reply.
U just cant think how much i am releaved after hearing this.

Well logically, i too was thinking that if some display is there then things should be fine. But the display now is only "no Signal".
and some how my laptop is not detecting it. I guess it is altogether a different issue. Which i will have to address after i take out the LCD fully.

And yes having PCB on only one side is really great. I can use the metal frame as it is in the projector.

Would just like to show u all brand of my LCD. Its quite strange. But seems authentic.

Both LG and Philips. This all i know about the LCD brand. rolleyes.gif

Next course of action: Get the small Screw driver. To disassemble it fully.
Will do that tomorrow/
Quasi_Mojo
LG Philips LCD is just the old name for LG Display.

Getting "No Signal" on the LCD display simply means that it is not receiving the input signal. You would see this if there were no video source hooked up (PC, DVD player, etc.). Or, you might need to use the LCD's OSD (on screen display) to select the correct input method. That's what the "button board" PCB is for that's shown on the back of the display in your first picture of Post # 2, above.

Thanks for Ur prompt reply. U sure have a lot of experienced.
I did try to connect it to my laptop, but the laptop was not detecting it.
I didnt give it a full try. Will do it some time later.

Next course of action : Call OPTICS & ALLIED ENGG. PVT.LTD in bangalore and find out their prices for lenses.
jaguar999
I called Optics and allied in bangalore, but their prices were too high.
So I am planning to get the lenses from Lensel Optics Pune(India)
will be posting the details in here, which will definetly help Indians out here.

Hi all

2. I got a Choke(Blast) of a local brand (national) to save cost. Rs 800/-
3. E40 Mogul Base Rs 45/-
4. 220v AC Fan (4") for Rs 250/- from Lamington road Mumbai.

Next course of action : Send a Demand Draft to Lensel Optics to get the lenses. Will update u all when i receive it.

Mean while, i have a question Can someone tell me where can i get First surface mirror in Bangalore. I got one vendor (optics and allied) but their prices were too high. Rs 1000 for a 6"X6".
Quasi_Mojo
Generally, when you buy an FS mirror, you get what you pay for. If it's expensive, you'll probably get a good quality mirror.
You can, however, make your own FS mirror.

Thanks Quasi for your constant support.

I took a piece of mirror 6"X 6" and tried to take off the paint with thinner (nail polish remover).
But it aint workin.
Can some one guide me where can i get the actual paint remover (in Bangalore) which can do the job.??

Also, I found one Matal halide fixture (flood light)
I guess the glass used over that must be a tempered glass.
I am still not sure that i should go for it or not, coz its hardly 4 or 5 mm.
Any suggestions ?? they cost Rs200/-

The Box

I had just 3 day to finish the job. I took help of a carpenter and got the box made.

For the focus mechanism i went in for a simple drawer design with was easy to explain to the carpenter

The Final construction

Earlier i was planning for a horizontal design, but it was taking a lot of space in the bedroom. So i finally decided to go for a vertical design.

Also made a stand to house the mirror, to be placed on top of the projector.Like the one we have in OHP

Hi Gaurav,
