I'm looking to make some lights that react to the music (not move, just turn on and off). I would want some lights for the bass and some for treble.

Here is a little circuit that changes light to sound, but I can't change whether it is effected by bass or treble. LINK

So my plan is to buy 2 of those and then somehow (hopefully simple) control tone.

I could hook one of these to the bass output on my amp, and the other to my main output (or even use an extra amp with the treble turned way up and the bass turned way down), but it seems like there showed be some cheap circuit to do this.

I would hook up cheap halogen colored 120v lights to it, and my goal is to have it cost about $50 or less.

Here’s one.
I can’t find a supplier of this kit yet, there’s still one more section to be published next month. Usually these kits are sold by Jaycar electronics or Altronics, check there next month.

Thanks for the idea, but Im making mine for this weekend, so I cant wait a month. I ended up buying the little audio to light kits, and I will use a crossover to split the bass and the treble. I bought some cheap colored halogens (120v) on ebay yesterday.

Ill post some pics once I make it so others can see.

I could be wrong but these both seem like they are just VU meters not spectrum analysers.

They might very well be. But they do seem to work. Here is the xmas version of it. Even cheaper too

wow, I wish I would have seen that before I bought the circuit board. I had a friend who is really good at soldering put the kit together for me and it doesn't work. The Christmas thing would have been cheaper, done the same thing, and be prebuilt. And with it, I could have also used a crossover to get the different parts of the spectrum.

Maybe I will get one these...

Im glad to see some replies on this topic! Im very curious myself. Recently I took the plunge into some DIY electronic drums, and I want to get into some DIY lights&visuals that would react in real time.

Does anyone remember the music to visuals on the old SEGA Dreamcast?? It had infinite combinations and tweakability.
I want something like that, which I could assign to midi note numbers.

Good to see some posts in the midi section in general smile.gif

More topics soon, I need some time wink.gif

Thought I should follow up with what I did. I bought one of the XMas Light to audio modulators for ~15$. I hooked it up to the subwoofer output on my amp. It is great, sensitivity can easily be changed based on the song. Then I hooked up a power splitter to the back of the modulator, so I could attatch several lights.

I attached 3 halogen gu10 lights. Each were 50w (2green, 1blue). Along with a strobe, this made the party great. Too bad the laser showed up two weeks late. I orderered a 5mw green laser from DX and they sent me a 10mw! Which then i modified to 30mw. The beam is so visible and with some spinning mirrors and a fog machine it will be awesome.

I highly recommend the XMas light modulator for a cheap DMX type of light controller.
