anybody have a good source for bamboo?

I can't find it locally... which is insane I think...
I'm about ready to plant some running bamboo in empty lots,
but then I'd have to wait 2 years before I could make my shishi odoshi

I've found a couple of companies, but shipping is outrageous.
I just want some 1", 2", and 3" poles around 6' long...

In my town they sell Bamboo at the Home Depot in the garden section, but the best place to get Bamboo is here.

Got a problem with deer? wink.gif

25 bucks will get you one of these.

I have a friend who had trouble with deer. Thats what a shishi odoshi
is designed for. Keeping deer out of the garden. He didnt want to make it out of bamboo so he made it out of PVC. Makes more of a "thoomp" sound, so he eventually put a wooden block on the bottom and cut half the pvc away. Sounds better now.

When he first started it up, it sounded like a grenade launcher. My thought was "Well, THAT will scare all the animals away."

i have to make it... smile.gif
my friend at work wants to make one as well...
we are gonna order enough bamboo to make 2 each... so 4 total...
give away the other as a gift...

Shipping will be the problem.

Dam, that site had an image of a tropical beach that reminded so much of home. I was already hearing the lapping of the shores the longer I stared at it. rolleyes.gif

I'll just add a word of caution while handling 'piao' (as we called it). If splitting, be careful of the strands that are fraying, they can be as sharp as razor.

it's not quite finished yet... need to make it 'pretty'...
(hide the water and power lines, hide the bucket with some rocks, etc)

but I finally got around to doing this...
