I just bought a ps3 and after seeing all the linux mods. I have decided to try it my self. ive been doing some resaerch online and from what i gathered, you only need four things to acomplish this:

1: usb mouse/keyboard

2:Computer with a cd burner

3:image writing software

4:Ubuntu 7.1

This opens up many opportunities and you dont need a high end pc to enjoy high def movie storage. This also opens up possibilities to "backup your current blue ray collection" (it's legal i checked). so if anyone has some cool mods: please post here. (no game backups or mod chips though)

all right: here the first couple of steps and there online extensions

1: get Ubuntu from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/custom/20071115-...powerpc+ps3.iso

2: get the image burning software: i cant give you the link but try typing this in google and see what happens: infra recorder
(note:the next step requires you to format your hard disk on your ps3 you can save your game/media with a usb drive if needed) then write the image to a cd

3:time to boot up your ps3- under the settings>system settings,go to format utility> format hard disk when it ask to format click yes. then when it asks to pick a partition setting for the hardware select>custom then select >alot 10gb for other os. then selct >quick format. it will ask you again to if you are sure click>yes. Then after restarting and logging in. go back to your >settings>systemsettings, then click >install other OS. After installing it on your ps3 restart and go back to >settings>system settings, and click >default system. after evrything is installed just click on >other os and it will prompt you to restart with other os.

4: If that's not easy, either pm me or reply in the thread with your problem and ill help through the steps. PS3 Rules, i used to hat eplaystation until i bought this. I hope microsoft burns and sony and nintendo form a monoploy. (wishful thinking)

Ok just thoguth id update: It turns out that the linux on the ps3 is very limited and i couldnt do half the stuff i wanted to with the ubuntu version, so i will be using yellow dog linux instead. by the looks of it people have gotten there wifi internet and high def videos to paly on yellow dog, and they have a great forum support for linuxes specifically on the ps3. Just by checking out you tube there are many emulators that play all the basic emulation: Game boy , Game boy advance, Super Nintendo, Mame, Sega Genisis, Master System. I have even seen people getting specail patches to play starcraft on the ps3 with full online capabilities. It's exciting to see what mods and code are being written for linux on the ps3. Right now it seems the only thing holding it back is that no linux supports multiple processors on a x86 type processor. But people have unscuccessfully coded ways around this, so it gives me hope. The next crack hopefully will be to allow ps3 users to use WINE, which if you know a little about linux allows you to run a variety of cool windows programs not limited to but including. World of Warcraft, Halo, Baldurs Gate, Prey and a lot of of mainstream pc games that use direct x. If anyone knows of any cool mods for the ps3 feel free to drop them in this thread. I cant wait till mor people start programming on this system because it has a lot of technology packed inside.

You know I have been interested in this for a while now. Its time to either A) build a new pc or cool.gif switch to console.

What has me interested in console is all the modding thats going on. I wanted the PS3 solely for watching blue ray at first however the more I read about the mods the more I'm leaning modded ps3 for a htpc.

Right on man. Im glad to see there is other interest on here. One thing I found during my modding experiments is that the ps3 linux is still unusable when it comes to high def content. The ps3 is truly revolutionary when it comes down to specs. Its the first machine of its kind to include so many new technologies in one box. one of them being an 8 core processer known as a cell proccessor. One of the proccessors controls the gui for the ps3 and is used as a the proccessor for the linux.
but there is still no "mutiple core" linux for the ps3, also no "wifi" function at this point. (meaning not enough juice for HD)
the best linux out there right now is "Ubuntu." closely followed by "yellow dog".
Ubuntu currently has no more support for the ps3 in their development, but because of how solid it was when it was ported to it, it still is better than the rest.
(I have talked with the staff of ubuntu personally and have begged them to support the ps3 in its developtment and they aggreed to bring it up in there next meeting so i am hopeful)

but your right in thinking of the ps3 as the new hdpc, because unlike the 360, it supports 1080p playback @ 120hz and a max of 60 fps, while the 360 only supports 1080p @ 60hz and 30fps.
(you just cant run it throuhg linux you woud have to use it on your ps3 gui.)

Good luck IN.

If you are into the mod scene you might want to check out the 360- they are incredibly cheap/ you can stream high def content/ and if you look into "flashing" your 360, you can play "backups" of all your games. something to look into perhaps.

360 may be an option - but no blue ray. I was reading some on was going to try mac os X for power pc - which i believe ues cell as well.

but no blue ray.

As for your blu ray concern that used to concern me but blu rays are pricey, and xoboxes are VERY easy to transfer high def content through. You can use a household usb pr an ethernet cable, wheras the ps3 does not support streaming windows function. So say you go to play your high def "Family videos" you just got from your grandma by downloading them by peer to peer (p2p, you and your grandma only) you could easily throw them on a blank DL if they are 720p or even some 720p files can fit on a normal dvd or download your grandmas 1080p "blu ray" and convert them to mp3g 4, and burn them to 2 dual layer disks (including the menus and special features).

and I love both my systems, but in todays economy its harder to reccomend sending drastically more money on the ps3.

oh and if you want to get your hands on a cheap xbox. you can buy a cheap broken one off of craigslist (RROD). And in the craigslist search box type in "xbox repair" and get it fixed for 40 dollars

so in the end you will spend 80 dollars for a high end hdpc (and when you ask to get your xbox repaired ask the craigslsit person of they do "firmware flashing" you dont need to know what it means they will do it for you and you will always have a way t play your backup games from your dvd burner.

Its hard to find a ps3 for under 300 dollars. so the price difference definately appeals to some people and keep in mind there are ways around blu ray just like there are ways around buying a projector. they both come with a little hassle.

You have a great point - and that's something I'll check into however as for blue ray: to me - its worth the extra money. Well so far anyway
