Network neutrality is a real hot button issue.
Public utility,
If you look at the internet as a kind of utility, then allowing large network providers to limit access to sites, unless they pay more money, is offensive. This model will eventually choke off small sites and limit the richness of the medium. Effectively they get to choose who and what you view.
Capitalism,
Pure capitalists believe that network providers have the right to charge and do what ever they want on their part of the system. The internet is a capitalist free for all (pay porn), and it's that creative, competitive environment that has made it what it is today.
Freedom of speech,
Some people look at this as a freedom of speech issue. If we start allowing them to selectively choose what data gets through then it’s only a matter of time before we have a big brother scenario.
So who's right ?
Even lumen lab exercised flood control to keep their systems in balance. The difference, I think, is that they own their own content, and have displayed ethical constraint. Big network providers have no soul and no lasting ethical constraint, only legal boundaries which society sets. The boundaries we set today could have far reaching consequences into the future. So where do you stand on the issue?
