...then you probably won't be able to read this solution, unless you figured out that disabling ZoneAlarm will restore your connection.

Don't go blame ZoneAlarm just yet since - as always I might add - it's actually Microsoft who's at the base of this problem. Their latest "security update" is causing the problems in ZoneAlarm.

The quick fix is to go to "Add/Remove Programs", make sure "Show updates" is ticked, and uninstall update KB951748. Checkpoint is aware of the problem and is currently investigating the matter. The long term fix is... well, there isn't one for the time being.

Innit just peachy that Microsoft can brake the internet connection for hundreds of thousands of people automatically? rolleyes.gif (and actually did)

It happened to me just now. I had 1 PC down, 1 PC running. Only difference was that the "bad" PC had just received automatic updates this afternoon. I disabled update KB951748 like the above post said, and my internet is working again. Just FYI.

Thanks a million! I just had one of my pc's drop its connection tonight and I couldn't figure out what the problem was. Man, Micro$oft, I tell you...

Hi
I experienced the identical anomaly when Installing a, to me, transparent automatic update, so I had no clue why my system suddenly was not connecting to the Internet. Then, having spent the better part of the day running virus checks, going into Safe Mode and tweaking some likely dangerous TCP system files in an attempt to trick my system into reconnecting... I finally was faced with a possible re-format of my hard drive.

But short of doing that I decided to try for the first time, one of those Windows XP *System Restores* which I had never really believed would ever work for anything without destroying my computer in other unique ways... BUT... as I hate spending a week backing up my hard drive, reformatting it and getting back to any semblence of productivity I opted for one of those "System Restores".

Needlesstosay I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was and how it worked! I restored to a point before I lost my connection. However not knowing what caused the problem and still having Automatic Updates on, I lost connection the next time I rebooted... I re-Restored, got back online and found this problem with the Update explained somewhat, thank you all.

I have unchecked automatic updates and am wondering IF I can ever install another Microsoft Update safely and what kind of security issues I am going to have NOW~!! with out the update?

Apart from Microsoft certainly not paying us all for the downtime they just put us through, I am concerned that I use Zone Alarm Free and AVG free... but it does not seem to be the core problem... is everyone recommending disabling Zone Alarm, enabling Microsoft's Fire Wall and then updating?
