I just finished my DIY projector and am wondering what i should do for a screen. I saw this on tiger direct.Cheapo screen. I was wondering if this would be significantly better than a blackout cloth screen? Is it worth the extra 70 bucks.

The same screen is on Amazon.com for $79.99 - but it says it's being supplied by TigerDirect. Strange.
There are quite a few negative reviews on Amazon, as well.

It doesn't say anywhere if the screen has a positive gain. If you want my opinion, I wouldn't buy a manual or electric screen for any price if it didn't have some kind of positive gain.

You'd be better off spending a little more and going with LL's 108 inch White Electric Screen.

Hmm, i would go with lumenlab screen but it is just slighlty out of reach form my 16 year old bank account. I think i will go for the old black out cloth.

I am at the same point of looking at what type of screen to go with. Blackout cloth works well for getting started on a budget so I am using blackout cloth that I picked up from WalMart. (I believe it comes in 57" widths.) It is fabric rather than vinyl but it was the widest blackout cloth that I could find in Ontario. It was cheap and it works okay.
From what I have read it is not a bad idea to invest in a really good screen...but what kind of screen surface is best for my setting? There are so many types of screens available today it can be a gamble to pay the big bucks only to find it was not the best choice. Out of curiosity I emailed Da-Lite and Elite screen companies and requested samples of their screen types and they obliged. I don't have them yet but they are sending me samples (about 6"x6") of each of their screen types. I plan to put them together on cardboard and see what surface types looks best in my setting. That will give me confidence in knowing what to focus on (no pun intended) in purchasing a good screen.

WOW! I just received the package from Da-Lite with all their free samples of screen types, catalogs, pamphlets etc. (Mailed out July 10th. from Indiana to Ontario.) Very generous of them. Nineteen different types of screen surfaces to experiment with. They even threw in rear-projection screen samples as well. Samples measure 6¾"x6¾". Now I get to play! laugh.gif

I look forward to hearing what you find out with these samples.

I did the black out cloth and ended up getting that screen ,, works great ,, looks good ,, I paid 100 ,on sale ,, they have a ton at tiger direct ,, always keep a lookout there. I will be doing the blackout cloth for outside again this year or if that vinly at walmart looks good . After adding in all the costs ,I figured it was cheaper to do the screen and it kept the wife happy on that part ..

You can also just use a sheet or two of white panel board. $11 each. Throw a coat of Behr Ultra Pure White or Silverscreen or make a mix for $25-$30 and there you go. Search for tiddler's pearl mix thread to see results.
