What is up with some of the portable DVD player resolutions? There is a model (Toshiba SD-P91S) that lists 640x220 as the resolution on a 9" screen. Yet others are an embarassingly low 320x240. I was going to use the panel from the old higher res Toshiba SD-P2500, which is 1024x600, but it bit the dust on me.

What is with the trend of the newer players having LOWER resolution than those a few years ago? Not even 720x480 (or 854x480) for the DVD standard, which is what most of these players are being fed. You would think that we'd be making progress in this area.

Manufacturers either don't think that consumers want higher resolution panels, or they are trying to maximize their profit. Which do you think it is?

That's a pretty sweet Portable DVD Player LCD. I found this on eBay, in case you want it.

I have been tossing around the idea of going this rout for my dad, what would the projection look like - and whats the max size before its the projection become pixelated?

I hear you with the profits but here is my take on that;

Let's say a company like Toshiba gets an idea to do something like this. Make a superior portable DVD player catering to the consumer with an eye for quality. Specs:

  • a 10.6" screen
  • Full 720P (native resolution 1280x720)
  • VGA/Component/HDMI Input/output to support hi-def sources
  • Dolby Digital/DTS optical/coax digital output
  • MSRP $299

The way I see it they could use an already developed panel like a 10.6" (or even a 7") from a small laptop, just tweak the controller, and you are bound to make some sales. People like us would eat them up and there are a lot of people who really do appreciate high quality and are willing to pay for it. If you could get BluRay capability in there they wouldn't be able to keep them in stock!

This would make most people in the Lumenlab forums salivate...

But I also see the flip side too; pump out the players for the soccer moms to pacify the kids with, make them as cheap and a fast as you can.

Probably because the difference on such a small screen isn't knoticable.

Plus everybody is after whatever company can produce a more affordable product. So companies go after this.

Unfortunitly, When building a projector you do use a small screen but the result is in the form of a big screen so high resolution is needed.

the problem is the price would probably have to be closer to $400 to be profitable. the small HD panels are still pretty expensive.
