Full Version: Can I hack my Evo 1.0?

Well, it's been a good run and I have no complaints, but my eVo 1.0 projector is finally saying "wrong operation, try again later" and I have just replaced the bulb (with a very sweet ceramic upgrade) but that did no good. It seems that there are enough parts here to get a start on my first homebuilt DIY projector, but where to go first. I don't really know what the "wrong operation" error means. Has anyone else graduated from the eVo to building their own. Does anyone have a guess what part I'm going to need to replace to get started putting this in a new box (I found some indications on the web that this is not the ballast). Any general recommendations?

Thanks for any help

It could be the controller.

Why not check the LL store to see if there are any more of the clearance 1.0 models on sale. Some might of had ballast or lamp problems but if yours are ok it may be a fairly inexpensive way to get back a working pj with some extra parts left over for good measure. Either way you may need a new controller and/or controller and new same size lcd combination. It seems silly to put it in a new box when you already have a good one.

I'd ask LL support, they probably have seen this before and have better suggestions and they may not see this thread.

If the LEDs are lighting up, check out this image (from the eVo 1.1 manual) to find out what might be wrong.

Also, could you let us know how you went about replacing the lamp in your eVo for future inquiries? Did you have to make any modifications? What lamp did you use? Pictures would be nice, if possible.

Those status lamps sound very helpful, but I have the eVo 1.0 - the only indication is the female voice. I can see why that was one of the first things improved on the later models. So ... no helpful status lights. And unfortunately, just as I had a need for one, it looks like they have sold out of the scratched, dented or ballast replacement units sad.gif .

I got the bulb replacement because I figured it must be the bulb that had failed. After a good deal of research I got a Ceramic HID bulb from lbutampa.com part # Satco CDM150/T6/942 (code S4266), supposedly they run cooler and have better color temp. It seems like that would have been great, but apparently that is not the problem. It's exactly the same size as the previous bulb and installed without a hitch using the existing bulb carrier, but the unit still will not start up. (BTW, the 1.0 is a different bulb than the 1.1 or 1.2 so if you have a later one you will have to research the ceramic replacement on your own - there was another post about it on the boards here, so that's a good place to start.)

I've been watching things on my tiny computer monitor for a week now and I am starting to get projector withdrawal symptoms, it's sad really.

If it's not lighting up, then the most likely culprit is the ballast.

Can you hack it? Sure. Chances are that the LCD still works, so you already have everything that you need exept a ballast.

I'm not sure how the eVo "knows" that the ballast is working, there seem to only be AC power in, and lamp power out for connections. Probably if you were to use the AC power to run a different ballast, the eVo would be satisifed that it's working, and fire up as normal.

That makes sense, and also their tech support just wrote back to tell me that it was most likely the ballast.

OK, so I'll try replaceing that first.

Now the big problem is that since the store doesn't have any in stock, what kind of ballast am I going to need. I would like to overbuild it a bit and keep it quiet. Also the ballast could be external if I can't squeeze it into that box.

Has anyone else ever bought a third party ballast for the eVo 1.0???

thanks for any help,
