Full Version: Chick flicks for Guys

I started to watch planet "Planet Terror" with my girlfriend and my brothers girlfriend. it didn't do well to say the least. so the girls stood in front of my projector and stated to harass us into changing to something more "evryone friendly. So no "friday" no "sin city" no "memento" or "blade". After getting kinda frustrated at all the turn downs i gave up and had them pick the movie. it turned out to be "drop dead gorgeous". My brother straight up refused to be there and told me we need to leave. since there was no convincing the girls. I thought what the H. why not just turn my brain off and get some points. Anyway the movie wasn't half bad and we all had a good time because of it. is that wrong to not mind a chick flick? well after i saw that I wanted to know from the LL's what chick flicks they thought were "watchable"?
OKflyboy
Uh oh, confession time... Notting Hill.

Titanic....it was good the first time...but not EVERY SINGLE TIME IT'S ON TV!

Fried Green Tomato's , I was able to bear it by assuming the two girls were les.

Waitress, I really liked this one

Steel Magnolias, never again...goes for anything with Sally Field

Oh, BTW, I would rather watch....ummmmmm, Titanic again than Planet Terror again, that was a complete waste of film. I think RR was smoking something wayyyyy to powerful...like Alaskan Thunderfudge or Coffin Nails when he story boarded that mess. I know it was supposed to be cheesy, but comon' /Rant

Must Love Dogs & Serrendipity.

Since Better off dead & Grosse Point Blanc are two great movies & I just like John Cusack these movies I can handle.
And since my wife is the type to watch the same movies over & over again I prefer these to the many "Bring it on" sequals that cause me to run from the room.

Jeremy Pivens is a bonus in serendipity.

Now, Kate & Leopold is I enjoyed.
I consider it a guy movie pretending to be a chick flick.

you've got:

Time travel.
Advice on picking up chicks.
If a woman doesn't see a man wash a dish / A tree falls in the woods analogy is classic X-show.

Dude falling down an elevator shaft in a comical way.
Josh from Road Trip.

And, Hugh Jackman's character is the epitomy of DIY.

All valid reasons why I shouldn't be ashamed to admit I liked this movie. smile.gif

How to lose a guy in 10 days, Raising Helen, An Ideal Husband, The Quiet Man...

Some of these can be quite survivable.

BUT!
The minutes someone starts dying of cancer or an inoperable brain tumor...Im gone..wink.gif
When I want to go on " An emotional roller coaster" I will pick a fight with my wife. Come to think of it, I usually dont even have to make a conscious decision to do it...

Fortunately, my wife and I share the same escapist attitude about movies.

smile.gif

PS. For the younger guys, if your looking to stimulate the "Fear/Sex" gene, then dont do action flicks.
The less violence, the more suspense, the better...

How to lose a guy in 10 days

eck.
It ceased to be bearable the 3rd time around.

That movie where Reece Whitherspoon is a ghost in coma.
Entertaining.
But agian, after the 3rd time I need to leave the room.

They remade The Quiet Man?

Out of the movies mentioned in the Kenn's World "Chick Flicks: A Man's Guide to Watching Movies with Your Better Half", I'll stick with suggesting movies that I have watched and liked. I don't agree with his title The Worst of the Worst "Chick Flicks".

Pretty Woman - I still get freaked out by Julia Roberts mouth, but it's a good movie.

Pretty in Pink - I still like it. Had a crush on Molly Ringwald when I was younger.

Sixteen Candles - Another great Molly Ringwald movie.

Sleepless in Seattle - I think it's a great Meg Ryan movie.

The Cutting Edge - Can you say "Toe Pick"?

Dirty Dancing - Had a crush on on Jennifer Grey, as well. Too bad she got a nose job.

City of Angels - Still have a crush on Meg Ryan. And it's got Nicolas Cage to boot. And I don't think he does his patented Nicolas Cage freaky excited hand waving in this one.

Titanic - Of course.

Thelma & Louise - I wonder why there was never a sequel.

What Women Want - Very funny. With Helun Hunt - another well-aging Babe!

How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days - Any RomCom with Matthew McConaughey is a winner.

50 First Dates - Not the usual Adam Sandler Movie.

Punch Drunk Love - Let me add this one for the same reason.

Reign Over Me - Same reason.

Say Anything - You can't usually go wrong with a RomCom that has John Cusack in it.

Better Off Dead - Very funny and same as above.

One Crazy Summer - John Cusack with an early Demi Moore. Those damn Fuzzy Bunnies!

Jerry Maguire - If you don't choke up when she says, "You had me at hello", you're not human.

Ghost - Can a movie go wrong with "The Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers?

The American President - Michael Douglas hasn't done too many RomComs.

Romancing the Stone - An earlier Michael Douglas RomCom I'm adding. Stay away from "The Jewel of the Nile", though.

You've Got Mail - I'd watch just about anything with Meg Ryan. Stay away from her recent "My Mom's New Boyfriend" - what a stinker!

Somewhere In Time - Not a comedy, but a good Christopher Reeve movie.

Any Pixar film - you can't go wrong with Pixar.

Man, there are too many movies! Many of the movies near the bottom ("Guy" Movies She'll Probably Like) of the Kenn's World list are good.

Although I don't only own RomComs, I would easily recommend about 95% of the movies I do own in my DVD collection.

Oh, there is one that nobody has mentioned that scored high with my wife and I enjoyed it too. It was called "I could never be your woman" with Michelle Phieffer, it sounds like a complete dud but it was a sleeper (IMO)

oops, double post...might as well add a funny pic

Come on mean girls anybody? mmmmm hmmmmm that lindsey lohan.

What about chick flicks that chicks are forced to watch? I love a good Jane Austen/Shakespeare movie as much as the next woman (usually more), but Notting Hill? rolleyes.gif The only Julia Roberts chick flick I like is Steel Magnolias, which freakin' rules, btw (and she is only an ensemble cast member). The little bro watches it of his own accord, same with Fried Green Tomatoes.

Anything with Meg Ryan except I.Q. is lame. Anything with Kate Hudson follows in the same vein. Hmm... same with J. Lo and I'm sure a few others.

Drop Dead Gorgeous is hilarious. It might as well have been a mockumentary about my home town. Let's see some good ones are Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge, "To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar" and While You Were Sleeping. "These mash potatoes are so creamy!"

Basically distilled, girls who like to be rescued like movies where the heroine is rescued. Personally, I find it kind of syrupy and would rather watch any number of shoot-em-up movies than get pulled into the vortex of damsel-in-distress nausea that the studios keep vomiting out. But hey, to each her own. smile.gif

Yeah, but you're a "chick" that builds DIY projectors. Definitely not the "norm" average.

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father prepare to die.

Somewhere in time, she owns the book (read it 4 times now), the movie and I know for sure it will be one of the first on the pj. Yeah I've seen it a few times.

Well to the OP - congratz on your "Be the best Boyfriend" award I hereby award you. Great choice, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, makes a woman feel loved and appreciated like watching the "chick flick" just to spend time and cuddle. The other guy, well - oops. just IMO

back to me -

she picks it, I watch it 98% of the time - and I freely admit most of them are cool. Accept for Sex in the city on TV ( and oMFG its a movie? ACK!) cant stand that horse they call SJP... the bride of Mr. Ed. I just cant stomach it.

oh and Labyrinth, yep - same as some where in time.
MyYz400
I'm surprised no one listed:

-Pursuit of Happiness - AWSOME!

-The Lake House - pretty good

-Ghost (ok a little to chick-flicky)

-Dreamer - not too bad of movie

Last night I partially watched The New World. Despite being able to sit through almost anything I just couldn't make it through this one and "baled" (heh!) about halfway through. Even my wife stopped when I did. Technically the movie (settings, costumes, etc.) was great but it bored me to tears. Maybe I was just in the wrong frame of mind.

Are you saying anything with J.Lo is a bad movie? Or just any "chick flick" with her is bad? Come on J. Lo in "The Cell".........OK I'm kidding about that one, not a good movie at all.

But seriously, J. Lo as supporting cast, not to bad, look at "Jack" with Robin Williams, great flick.

Oh, no! My secret is out! I'm neither normal or average on lots of topics, but I'd guess if all my above and below average traits got blended together, I'd end up being a pretty average woman. At least that's what I tell myself. wink.gif

SilentReaper, never seen Jack, but I was implying any chick flick with J. Lo is lame. I mean I'm all about Latinas gettin' their piece of the pie, I'm just not particularly fond of her acting so weak when she isn't. She's one tough Boricua that could eat people for breakfast, I'd just think she'd want to portray characters that have the same strength.

Shit! Did my feminism just get loose? wink.gif

lol, i'm I the only one here who's girlfriend has been more into films like Star Wars and Aliens (In face I remember bieng dragged to see Alien Vs Predator [I had already seen it and well, was not impressed]). That, and films which I would refer to torchure porn is generally how i'd describe there tastes.

Though I gueess this is better then sieng the next Meg Ryan film. happy.gif
GadgetSmith
Hmmm...

I never mind watching 50 First Dates, High Fidelity, Serendipity, I.Q., Wedding Crashers, Sideways, For the Love of the Game, Roxanne, It Could Happen to You, Fever Pitch ( hey, we waited 86 years I could watch this once a day for life ! laugh.gif ) ... there are plenty of others too. Typically when my wife watches a movie she can choose anything she wishes as there are enough times I get to induldge myself with movies like 300, Star Wars, etc... which have no interest for her. I've grow to really appreciate the fact she loves Americal Idol (something I detest), as this gives me time to watch the things I like, but she doesn't smile.gif

Movies we both enjoy w/o all the "romatic comedy" aspect are True (or based on True) Story type movies. Rudy, Remember the Titans, World's Fastest Indian, Walk the Line, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Invincible, etc...

Awww, in X2 Lulu is all maternal and stuff. I prefer her tough girl self in X. Though personality-wise I'm a Yuna through and through, the coloration just worked better with Lu. And I'm probably better at black magic than summoning anyway. wink.gif

That HAS to be the nerdiest thing I've ever said. Thank God for the internet. I would have been crucified in my own home for spewing that out loud. ohnoes.gif ph34r.gif rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

So I saw the Sex and the City movie on Friday. It was okay, considering I'd never seen the tv series. There was this huge gala thing and my girls and I ended up going to some "VIP party". It was fun, got a couple of free cosmos out of it. My buddy kept saying it was the perfect place for single guys to go. Smart. But I said that it was likely that a single guy would be perceived as being 1) gay, 2) with a woman already there or 3) possibly a weird sleaze ball who goes to women-rich events to scam. I saw exactly one guy in the theatre and was asked which category he fit into. Definitely 2. He looked pissed. laugh.gif

Looking back, I've never made a boyfriend see a chick flick. But I did camp out for Episode 1 tickets. Realizing this means the current prospective manfriend will likely have to atone. Poor bastard. laugh.gif The BF I camped out with did watch my all time fave, Sense and Sensibility for an English class and hated it. I wasn't there or I might have smothered him with a pillow. wink.gif "Pearls before swine." laugh.gif

I watch so few romantic comedies, romances, or even straight up comedies that when I do I am often pleased by the change of pace. Just caught Definitely Maybe on a plane and didn't throw up (despite the food). Also saw Juno recently and was pretty entertained. I remember liking The Notebook as well (just about anything with Ryan Gosling in it is worth watching).

Here, here! Lars and the Real Girl is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Poignant and so hilarious. Good movie. And it's not a chick flick.

However, I'm kinda cracking up here about what shows are getting pegged as chick flicks. It involves the human condition and no gets their ass kicked or shot at? Must be a chick flick. wink.gif

Hoagtech, I'm not trying to sound like a tough girl. I AM a tough girl and can be as dainty as I choose and still keep my Amazon rep in tact. In fact, just today I put a brand new service panel and circuits in a commercial building down the street because my brothers don't know how and I'm kinda the family business electrician. As I donned my tool belt after coming back from a Home Depot run in my bro's truck, the little brother pipes up, "D, you're the straightest lesbian I know." laugh.gif It's true. I'm straight as can be, but not all my passtimes would indicate that. wink.gif My gym stats will have to be touted another time. rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

Well, I'm the first to admit I'm not a not a master electician, but for someone (male or female) that two years ago was in a very different field and knew nothing about wiring, I think I'm doing pretty good.
*shrug*

As far as being on topic, is Kim Kattral ever not a hussy in a movie? wink.gif

Was forced to endure "Fool's Gold" this weekend.

On a scale of 1-10...maybe a 3.

Sadly, the "special features" real was rife with The lead and the Female lead going on and on about how they had this great chemistry and how they loved to flirt with each other etc...

NONE of which was evident in the film itself.
At the end of the movie, I actually turned to my wife and said "This is supposed to be a comedy, right?"

Avoid this movie like the plague.

Did all you DIYers build projectors just to torture yourselves?

You guys seem to see more bad chick flicks in a year than I have seen in a life time. Makes me wonder if finishing my projector is such a good idea? You guys really deserve a klondiK bar.

If you want to impress her with a movie you'll both like try " The King of Masks ". Its a low budget chinese sleeper.
hoagtech
Does anyone know of any good chick flicks in the theaters right now? Weve been fighting lately and im using chick flicks as a drug. (it seems to work, bad mood before, Pllow talk after). But ive never been to one in a theater, so does anyone know of a good one on the big screen right now?

Sorry you guys are fightin. That always sucks.
I have always viewed movies as a place to be when you are both in a good space. Sounds more like you need to take her to a nice little place and eat and chat. Most of the time when my wife and I get into a spot like this it's because one of us (or both) is feeling taken for granted or ignored. If you go to a movie and dont come out with the same type of experience she may see it as you trying to buy her off.
(Not good)

Take her someplace where you can both have some fun, but it's really more for her. You obviously care enough to ask so Im certain that you have knowledge of something she would really like to do with you.

Even if it's ballet, at least you are expanding your horizons...wink.gif

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you!

I just finished Definitely, Maybe. That was a really good movie. I'll definitely be adding it to the collection and will probably watch it yearly.
If this movie doesn't tug at your heartstrings, then you're definitely faking it!

If you like Ryan Reynolds, then check him out in The Nines and even Waiting... (Here's one IMDB member's comment: "Disturbing, disgusting, offensive, and better than I expected").

I was watching The Swell Season: Live From The Artists Den earlier tonight. It's fantastic watching a live concert on a big screen.

Which got me to thinking about the movie Once. If you're at all into acoustic music, I would recommend this movie for a "date night" on your home theater. It's a nice story with great music and wonderful singers/actors.

After that, I came across this gem of a movie called August Rush. It may not be very realistic and a bit of a fantasy/fairy tale, but It thought it was a good, entertaining movie.

Oh... I watched P.S. I Love You the other day, too. Another good couples movie.

I just saw "you me and dupree" yesterday and i would reccomend it to anybody, it has some funny toilet humor and bazzare something about mary style comedy. I fyou want to see a comedy that has chick flick influences but some actualy funny jokes, pick this one up
