Last two movies I've watched the dang subtitles won't go away despite disabling and/or toggling every dang subtitle menu I can find.
Perhaps this will help y'all help me home in on the problem (apologies for any whacko terminology I may use):
If I access the DVD subtitle menu I can overlay an offset display of subtitles on what is being displayed. So, it's not that.
If I don't have any ffdshow filters activated the subtitles are pretty large - the lettering is like a twelfth or so of the screen height.
If I use resize and aspect filter the subtitles get smaller - which I can't quite figure out.
Ideas? Maybe a reinstall of the Zoomplayer package would do the trick? I'll keep fiddling.

Are you watching a digitized ripped DVD (possibly downloaded) or a retail DVD?
If it's downloaded, you may have a separate subtitles file. Deleting or re-naming the file will get rid of them.

Two retail DVDs. Gonna try more this weekend. Problem just appeared . . . WHAM . . . and won't go away.

Durachko - I have the EXACT same issue, but am reduced to making the font as small as possible and positioned it offscreen. I look forward to the answer to this as well.

Have you tried turning subtitles off in ZoomPlayer, through the DVD's menu and using the remote (note: three separate areas)?
Perhaps try another DVD software player like VLC Media Player.

did you change the language that your operating system is displaying? this sometimes prompts DVD playing software to show subtitles. it happens when i switch my mac over to french, dvd player either plays the french audio, or, failing that, the french subtitles. but i dont know what a fix would be.

@donkeytech: If I did that I'd be squinting at the damn subtitles all the time then!!!

But thanks for the idea and I hope we can resolve the issue eventually. Keep watchin'.
@Quasi: Pardon my ignorance but whaddaya mean by remote? If I were using a standalone DVD player then I'd see what you're saying but I'm using a PC. Can't quite figure what you mean but I'm probably just having my typical cranial block. Yeah, I'll try another player just to verify they DON'T show up then.
@chaos86: No worries there. I've had such agonizing troubles with language packs I usually just quietly kill people who install them in any computers I ever have to deal with and dispose of the bodies where they won't ever be found.

Thanks though.

In some Dvd players you can set the transparency of the subtitles.
Turn it all the way up and they are invisible.

It is possible to have a remote for PC functions. Especially a media center PC. I was just trying to cover all bases. Perhaps, as you mentioned, a complete uninstall and re-install of the ZoomPlayer is in order.

I had a similar issue for a while using Media Player Classic. After much frustration I found that the problem lay with the Nvidia something or other filter. I can't remember exactly but as I recall the Nvidia decoder had a subtitle on/off option, but I don't remember if it was actually called "subtitles". My problem with why it took me a while to find , was that every time I looked at it, the option was turned off, but I still had subtitles. But, I found that I could turn them off by right clicking on the video, going to filters, selecting the nividia one, and just clicking on apply or ok (or whatever they use). Unfortunately I had to do that EVERY TIME I watched a movie so it got pretty annoying. I uninstalled the nvidia filter a short time later.

pitman2: I think you've got it! Last night I was playing a game with my kid and popped in a DVD and played around awhile trying to get rid of them but convinced myself it had something to do with the nVidia card. Thanks. I'll report back when I have time to play around some more!

My problem wasn't with the video card, but with nvidia software. If I recall correctly, I downloaded the nvidia pure video trial software or something.

Poor choice of words on my part. You see, I recently upgraded to a newer nVidia card and installed new drivers and I'm thinking that's maybe when my problem started. Still haven't dug deeply into the problem yet. It's very annoying having them dang subtitles all the time.

Been too busy to do any projector-related stuff. Such a hinky problem though. Just can't figure it. I'll post again about this someday . . . like in a year or two!

Under Dvd Settings in Zoom, you can disable the subs. Then make sure that subs are turned off in ffdshow or any other filter you might be running. Under Smart Play in Zoom, you can add a filter to the "prevent following filters/decoders from being used" and add in DirectVobSub just in case. If that doesn't work, check all the options and settings in Zoom in case there might be some option for it somewhere else. Does it do it with using Windows Media Player?

I'd not so long ago reformatted my HD and was trying to keep the machine clean so didn't install WMP. I did most of what you described above to no avail but I'll dig back into it when I have some time. Actually, the last two movies I watched didn't have the subtitle problem.
Thanks for the detailed reply.

You might try using SM Player as well.

If you right click on the movie while playing in Zoom, there should also be a "subtitle off" or something function. The auto-disable won't block the subs if that other option is on. I'm just getting into the htpc thing, but try another player to see if it's Zoom or some loaded codec doing it.

YAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
The subtitles are back!
The subtitles are back!
They vanished for awhile.
Watched something using WMP last night and the subtitles are back and they mostly have a few of these - ÿ - in front of each line.
WTF???
Oh well - I'll exorcise this beast someday.
Thanks for all the hints everyone.

I would probably try next removing all codecs and then just add the ones you absolutely need.

Are you, by any chance , watching them enhanced with FFDshow?
Nope. I don't know exactly what in the hell my computer is doing to me but I've lectured it at length to NOT use ffdshow.
Seriously, this is very mysterious but I'm afraid there are things going on I'm not even vaguely aware of within my PC.
I'll get it eventually.

Have you tried "Stream Properties?" There's a "hide subtitles" option.

You might want to give this a try:

I recently had the same issues with subtitles only on dvd"s played through Media Center. I was able to watch dvd's without subtitles using other media players though. I finally used a program I had previously installed that would allow me to choose what video decoder to use. The program is Microsoft windows xp video decoder checkup utility, this will allow you to choose a preferred video decoder to use that is compatible with MCE. Mine was set to ArcSoft and a quick change back to my NVIDIA video decoder fixed it right away. Here is the link to the program, or you can search the long name mentioned above.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=enHope this helps anyone else who has this same problem. By the way I am running XP MCE 2002 SP2.
http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/permalink...ead.aspx#232134Other people have been pointing the finger at the ArcSoft decoder.
