Full Version: What is the best way to mount your LCD?

Hi folks,

I finally got my stuff, so I can start now with building my projector. I already have stripped the LCD, but now I'm having a problem. I'm wondering what's the best way to mount your lcd. Can some one help me with this? Thnx! Btw if your lcd is a little bit dirty, what's the safest way to clean it? smile.gif

What LCD do you have?
What kind of build are you going to do - straight horizontal, vertical or what?
Does you LCD have any FFCs or PCB on the side?
Are you going to re-use the plastic/metal frame the LCD came in?

Yeah sorry, you are right, here is a photo. I have a sharp 7.1 inch. If I want to use the plastic frame, then I will need to cut it. If there is a better way, I prefer that one ofcourse! The projector will be horizontal smile.gif

I am building my frame like this picture, using metal channeling I have to hold the bare LCD in place. The measurements are for my 15" but you'll get the idea.

basically the three non ffc sides will be completely channeled, the ffc sice will have two 1" pieces, 1 on each side. then the board falls through the slit smile.gif

I would suggest cutting the plastic would be the most effective way to do this. Re-use the front part of the frame, since that will hold the LCD in place securely, and does not get in the way of the image at all.

I would recommend re-using the frame it came in, as well. It'll give the LCD a little bit more protection. You'll also be able to use the screw holes in the existing frame which will make mounting it even easier. Your mounting frame can be as easy as a hole cut into some MDF (cut to size for your enclosure), and then screw the LCD over the hole.

I have a 7.1 sharp lcd the plastic is easy to cut with a razor knife. I'll take a picture of my setup and be back.

Quick question:

On most LCDs (With the exception of the Sony PSOne) the ffcs attatch at the top of the LCD. Since the projection lens rotates the image 180 degrees, in most projectors (straight shooters in particular) that means that the circuit boards need to go on the bottom of the projector.

If this is the case with your panel, you'll be looking at an upside-down image.

Second observation: It appears that you have the LCD oriented so that the "front" of the image is facing the projection lens. For front projection, you are looking at the image from the same direction as the lamp, which would mean that you'll be looking at a mirror image of what the LCD is displaying. Again, most of these projectors end up with the electronics between the LCD and the projection lens, not on the side of the lamp.
