It looks like prices are starting to come down for small, HD LCDs.

I wonder if those of you who sell LCD panels can look into what LCD this mini-notebook uses. It would be nice to have a panel smaller than the current 12.1 720p LCD that johnzo sells.

BTW: Here's a review of the mini if you're interested:

Looks like the responce time is not so great.

50ms does seem to be a bit on the high side.
But you have to keep in mind that we use LCDs under non-normal conditions. The LCDs in our projectors are subject to higher temperatures, due to lighting, which heats up the LCD crystals and seems to lower the response time.

Very true. I like the saying... "seeing is believing", although you should "believe 1/2 of what you see, and none of what you hear"... smile.gif laugh.gif

I'm still interested if anything will come of the 7.2" wxga panel that was found, but apparently no suitable controller was found, as well as no suitable FFC extension....

oh well..i think i'll keep the 550 parked until a cheaper light source and cheap HD panel that's approx. 8" comes around.

Any more news on this panel? This could be a sweet little panel for anybody with a smaller build.

I found this e-mail from SmallHD on another forum:

Hi Everyone,

I reluctantly say this is the first official email sent to the SmallHD.com mailing list... which you are on... so here we go...

As many of you know, our website has not changed a single bit since June of 2008. We admit that makes us look like a bunch of slackers... but this neglect is mainly because we've been pouring all of our energy into creating a new product that is far superior to the "XII" showcased on the current site.

As of now, a splash screen has been put up indicating that a new site will go live in the near future, which will reveal everything about the product we've been working so hard on: the "DP1". With subject to some variation, the DP1 will boast the following basic specs:

1) 1280x768 native resolution
2) 8.9" diagonal screen
3) 179 degree viewing angle
4) LED Backlight: 300 nits (brightness)
5) Less than 1.5lbs
6) Dimensions less than 9"x5.5"x1.1"
7) Housing Milled from a Single Block of Aluminum.

We are unable to give out an exact date for the website or product launch at the moment, but from this point forward, we will update you through this mailing list as that time comes closer and closer. As of now, we have successfully created a functioning prototype of the DP1 from plastic. The aluminum versions of the housing are in the works. Being that the LCD display we are using in this product is cutting edge, there are still some programming issues we are working out with our circuit board supplier overseas, and those will be cleared up in the next 3 weeks.

We really appreciate your continued interest in the products we will soon be offering at SmallHD.com. We sincerely apologize for the delays we have incurred, but we assure you that no time is being wasted. We will not release the DP1 (or any product) until it is up to our standards, and every extra day is spent perfecting this new device so that once it is made available, it will be well worth the wait.

Thanks again... You'll hear from us soon...

So... it all depends on what LCD panel they are using, whether or not there's a FFC issue, and if so, is it fixable. The price was rumored to be around $400 for the finished product. Hopefully johnzo can track down the LCD and controller manufacturer and source the parts for less than that.

I did a search as we are supposed to and came across this post, ok so this a resurrection of sorts.

I was looking at this today on the good ol' Bay and it is pretty well priced (89.99 BIN for those who don't BIN=Buy It Now)). The resolution puts it in my HD (720p) range I mean who can tell the difference between 1080 and 720 right (oh know I dit int!!!).

Has anybody found anything else? The DP1 looks good but at 799.00 USD, I am a bit leary, but then again even at 799.00 that would include all of the goodies (hence it less looking for the compatible parts) and you would still have a far superior and cheaper model PJ compared to a commercial purchase. Oh well any idea's formulating out there?

Oh well forget what I said I see that MLCD has kits and stuff for this already... Needed to read a little more, I want to start a small panel build so I have some reading to do. Have a good day or night all.

Ok now I see that Digital view might have something to fit this joker...

That is nice but I am thinking more along these lines:

I just wish it would give more info but I like the idea of building a PJ that has a smaller foot print. But I guess that if I want the best possible visual gaming and blu ray experience I have to go bigger don't I?
