Hey.. I know most of you audiophiles and hometheatre buffs are going to laugh but I've been using an old set of Medion 5.1 PC speakers with some adapters with an evo 1.2 for a very cheap home theatre. Sound wasn't bad even for the sitting area, but alas the bass has died so I'm looking for a replacement.

Anyone know of a potential setup with some Pro Logic II capabilities(for the Wii) that I can get for 250 or less?

So far I've seen

Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 505-Watt 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System for like 170 bucks but I'm not sure it has the hook ups for the wii without me adapting and possibly losing the pro logic support. (I'm not sure as I'm new to the whole pro logic thing)
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-THX-Certifi...1872&sr=8-1

heard home theatre packages might be better though. Thoughts? and yes I know the budget is cheap and ghetto by most home theatre standards but it'll be like a small apartment room where its finally used in a few months though.

I have a switch but plug ins for standard stereo plugs would be great (most of my stuff doesn't have optical out so using RCA on the wii/dvd player etc.)

TH logitech z5500 are the best you're going to get in that price range unless you have the time to create your own system for scratch. I'm an audiophile and if you plan on using them just for movies, there great. However if you want to listen to music on them they can be lacking, however wire up some good 12 gauge wire and the sound improvement is amazing. smile.gif

Oh got tons of wire.. found the manual and seems it doesn't ahve direct RCA input.. I have to use an adapter to convert it to stereo(easy I have it) 3.5 mm then it plugs in via one jack 3.5 mm for the 2 rca connectors.

Will I still get the pro logic II from the wii if I do this?

Yup tried googling it first but didn't find what I needed. =) thanks though I understand trying to limit double posting and what not for stuff readily available. Mainly was fishing for opinions on a cheap speaker set since whether I agree with it or not the feedback on these forums is usually well reasoned.

Thanks for allt he help so far guys! =D

I picked up a set of Z5500 speakers and I like them a lot.

If you're interested amazon.com is selling them for $210 with a $40 MIR bringing the total price to $170 with FSSS. That's about as low as you could expect for these speakers... Rebate purchase cut off date is 4/1/08

Better yet, Tiger Direct has 'em for $10 less after $40 rebate: $160 total shipped (make sure to choose ground shipping).

Worked for what I needed. Oddly they don't seem as loud as my old speakers specially on teh sub(and that was a really budget set) but they aren't boomy, so far no popping.. the sub is TONS better in use and quality even if not in loudness, and the Dolby Pro Logic 2 definatetly has been working even adaptered down. Can't tell of any distortion in sound so far. Filling up a fairly large great room with it and while not as loud as some options isn't bad especially for the price. Haven't upgraded the speaker wire yet so can't tell you how much that does or does not improve things. Seems like ok construction, I dropped the control box and everything is still working dandy.

So far I likes. Only thing I kinda wish is that you could control the front and rear satellite channels seperately. Instead they just let you control sub, center, satelites(all satelites together) seperately. Also while it doesn't really affect my setup, each of its "built" in switch ports that are for standard stereo take up a port where you'd normally hook up your PC 5.1 sound. So if you plan to have a PC plus a bunch of other stereo devices hooked up at once you'll need to look into a switch of your own.

Tested with movies, and wii. No straight up music yet.

If anyone else wants to buy some low-cost but great 5.1 speakers then the Philips MMS460 ones are fantastic.

The bass is like an earthquake even on the lowest setting.

Unfortunately though they use only 3 stereo sockets, no optical or coaxial, (although I was told by an expert that they accept coaxial through one of the sockets, I have tried it but without much success so far (very "noisy"), could be emf interference maybe I dunno).

If you just want to use 3x stereo sockets for 5.1 channel audio they work great with PowerDVD.

Also the bass is great when using xbox360, especially when the "boomers/locusts" come in gears of war.

Some reviews say there is hissing, I have used these for about a year & haven't had any hissing problems, the signal to noise ratio is very good in my opinion, so maybe they were using their computers at low volume with the speakers turned up.

They seem to be very inexpensive and are budget friendly. Pricegrabber.com has them listed for $83.24.
They seem to be getting very good reviews, too.

Nice find for the budget minded.
