Full Version: Hooking up both a dvd player and a computer to a projector

I have a question I'm hoping someone here will be able to answer. My church is currently running a setup for service where we have a laptop hooked up to two projectors using the vga out and a splitter in order to project various powerpoint slides onto the screens throughout the service. In the next couple weeks we're going to also need to have a dvd player hooked up to the projectors in order to play a movie clip at a certain point in the message. We need both the computer and the dvd player hooked up at the same time, with the ability to switch on the fly. I've found a few options for a 2 port VGA switch that seems like it would work, except the dvd player we have doesn't have a vga out. Short of buying a new dvd player, what are our options? Would buying a component to vga adapter work to use the component out of the dvd player to the vga input of the switch, or are there fairly inexpensive (less than $200) switches out there that would allow us to have multiple types of inputs and a vga output?

I'm currently at a loss, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

For YUV to VGA you are going to need a converter box. Just an adapter won't work because VGA is RGB. (Picture will be green)

You will have to look into synchronization also.
DVD Player to VGA works if you have the following:

A DVD Player with RGB out.
That DVD Player can do progressive Scan on RGB.
The projector has "sync on green" (otherwise you need a sync stripper)

Why not use the laptop DVD Drive ?

The laptop we're using is not the greatest, and is already running powerpoint, audacity (to record the sermon), and itunes (for before and after music), so to add in a dvd program I think just might make the thing explode.

What about something like this? It appears to be a component to vga converter with a vga passthru, do you think that would fit my needs?

Well i can't say for sure, but IMO it should work. But i think you still need a progressiv scan Player.
Just google "component transcoder" and you should find tons of devices and reviews.
