Truthfully: you can use any LCD you want.

If you're following the standard LL design for your projector (bulb>fresnels>lcd>triplet) you'll need very large fresnel lenses (like those you mentioned that are on eBay). You'll also need a triplet that can capture the whole area of the LCD, the "pro" triplet is probably good enough to go up to a 21" LCD IIRC. ...What I'm saying is, any LCD can be used as long as you have lenses that will work with it.

The only thing you really have to ask is "is this better than something else?". Most 42" LCDs are 1080i/p which is lower resolution than the 15.4" WUXGAs that a lot of us use. Also, they're very expensive. Buying new, I'd be surprised if you could find one for much less than $900. A 15.4" WUXGA and controller can be had for ~$500 easily.

Another issue is that the LCD is a major contributing factor in the size of your projector enclosure. For a 42" LCD you're probably looking at an enclosure about the size of a love seat!

There would be a few advantages to using a large LCD (like those TVs can be very high end), but they're far outweighed by the disadvantages.

Yeah it's theoretically possible. But why? 42" aint too shabby, just stick that on your wall.

The second largest complaint people have about their DIY projectors is the size of the box. Yours would have to be enormous. I don't know the math, but you'd need a huge triplet, which means huge triplet FL, which means long ass box, in addition to having the 42"er define the height and width.

No it's not possible.

There would be no way to find a triplet that has a wide enough FOV to make it work.

If you can accept doublet quality this this lens set might do.

This is a 6" lens set. It should cost a lot.

The whole idea of using such a large LCD does make things quite expensive with no guarantee that the final image would look better than a $1,000 DLP PJ.
