Full Version: Silver/gray seems brighter

I bought a Draper Luma, 10 Foot Video Format Matte White screen recently and am still working on a final setup/configuration for my home theater.I'm happy with the this screen when its dark in the room,at night, its very acceptable.Today in the daytime with regular mini-blinds(its sunny outside) covering the windows,I was messing around with various audio components and turned my projector on with the projector in its picture settings mode, with lots of colored text being displayed.Well,I had my DirectTV sattelite box/reciever in front of the screen and noticed a VASTLY CLEAR/BRIGHT difference between the screen I bought, and the small amount of text being displayed on the front of the sattelite TV reciever, which is Silver/Gray in color.I can't believe the difference! The big white screen looks washed out, while the small amount of projection on the reciever looks great!

I'm now thinking I should have purchased a screen with a silver or gray finish,I'm almost positive that it would give me a nice picture during the day, even with with a good amount of ambient light in the room, let alone the difference when its completely dark in the room.I plan on using this PJ outdoors in the Summer for outdoor viewing at night anyway, and could make my outdoor setup using the Draper Luma Matte White .

I definitely have to have a pull down screen in my HT setup,a permanent one is out of the question, since its in my living room.Is it worth it to just go ahead and buy another screen with a silver/gray finish for my indoor HT?Are these pulldown screens 'paintable'?

The Draper Luma was a low end screen($138.00 shipped).I'd like to keep it under $200 if I buy another one with the kind of results that I accidentally discovered as descibed above.

Thanks in advance for any input on this.

--On EDIT,my PJ is a DIY also ,I'm not sure about lumen output on this thing. Its a standard OHP EYB 360 watt halogen bulb--

The blacks may be pushing blue though, have a play around you never know. I find the best screen for me is white, as it gives the best overall spectrum for my projector at the moment, however grey will probably be better if your projector has a low lumen output.

lonewolfmichigan,

There ARE Paints that can be applied to your retractable screen that will give you exactly what you seek for under $100.00, including the means by which to apply them. Just ask here on this thread or via PM if such a thing is possible for you to consider as a DIY project.

You'll get a response, believe me.
