I need to make a 3.5 mm to composite cable for a portable DVD player i'm planing on using in a projector.

right now I have an A/V cable from my digital camera & that works, but it isn't a perm. solution.
I'd like to take one of my sheilded composite video cables & use that.

Does anyone know if I can just take a 3.5 mm to RCA mono audio adaptor like this:

& use it or are the contacts on a different location?

I've yet to find a 3.5 mm to composite cable that is specifically for video.

If I understand your question correctly, you need a cable to feed composite video into the portable, correct? I believe the portable will be expecting a mini/3.5mm with three notches (audio L/audio R/video). Is that how your camera cable is notched? If so, this cable should work (you could simply cut the audio plugs).

You almost have it correct.
My DVD player has seperate 3.5 mm jacks for video & audio.

Right now i'm using the cable you suggested.
It seems to work, except i'm having some really weird problems & I don't know if it's the conector on the A/V cable or something in the signal the ATI card is sending that the DVD doesn't like.

I have 4 different ATI video cards & 3 different little yellow Svideo to composite adaptors for those cards & everything on my DVD's screen is black & white.
It isn't a driver issue because straight from boot it's a black & white image.

Everything is in color on a TV.
But when I hook it up to the DVD player I get B&W.

Now, an Nvidia card shows color on the DVD screen & so does my DVD player so I think i'm missing something.

OK, I get it now. I know you said it can't be a driver issue, but maybe a tidbit from this page might help:

"Here's a tip from a Daniel W. of the UK that needed to change the setting from NTSC to PAL on a Toshiba Satellite running Win XP-home with an Intel Graphics card; if the video setting is not changed, the tele will only display black and white since the video format in the UK is PAL: "To find the correct tab to change the s-video options: Display properties; Settings menu; Advanced; Intel Graphics menu; Graphics Properties; Devices menu; Television menu; then change NTSC to PAL - Problem solved!"

Perhaps you need to switch PAL > NTSC or NTSC to PAL.

Further evidence that incorrect tv signal type can cause black and white can be found here and here.

[EDIT: A bit more searching turning up quite a lot of older posts about this issue. Apparently, it can also be caused by cards not liking your S-video > component cabling, loose cables, and bad drivers]

It's something along these lines.

I just can't put my finger on it.

Two of the ATI cards have NTSC / PAL jumpers on them & their set to NTSC.
I've also verified that the bios splash-page is in color on my Tube TV at boot time using these cards.

Something is happening between the video card & only the DVD to make the picture black & white.
Using a correct cable would be a step in figuring it out.

It could be some kind of PAL / NTSC thing.
but why only the ATI card?

I have an old Evil Kyro card with TV-out.
I'll plug that in & see what happens.

What is the make and model of the portable DVD player?

I have one that I got from radio shack It is a mono to mono shielded phono to jack adapter looks just like the one you have pictured. Black band is in the same place as the one you show. Mine works fine with my polariod DVD player. It has the same setup as you describe audio and video are split. Should work fine.

AMW M-270.
I can't get to the settings menu.
It didn't come with a remote & my universal remote codes don't seem to work.

Ok.
I'll give this a try.

jeez.
I paid $15 for the whole unit with shipping off e-bay.

I'll try the adaptor.
If that won't work i'll have to make do with the Nvidia card.
