Okay all you smart people, I am sure someone has dealt with this already somewhere, but I will be darned if my searching can dredge it up.
What is the really good, EASY solution to dropping all 200 or so of my "preferred" DVDs into the drive on my PC, ripping them to some kind of nice structure from which I can then use with my media player of choice to have my own On-Demand service at home?
Seems the only ways I have been successful in the past is to do a whole lotta steps. I want it to recognize the main movie from the DVD, rip that, nab the cover art, put them all into a directory structure similar to what MusicMatch does, so I can flip through them in my whimsy and pick a movie to play on a PC in the theater.
Any ideas? Oh, and to keep the quality of the image at what is on the original DVD, how much storage are we talking about for 200 discs?

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_so...b_decrypter.cfmtry to find a copy of that software, near that version number. That will make it a one step rip. And I would say on average a movie dvd is around 7GB: so that would take about 1.5 TB.

If you are wanting to keep everything on the DVD as-in (no compression) you will have to use dual layer DVDs for most movies. If you plan on making legal backups of 200 movies, the price difference between regular and DL dvds may be an issue. I assume you know how cheap blank dvds are, and DLs are around a buck each. You also need a dual layer dvd burner.
Another option is stick with regular 4.7 GB dvds, strip all the extras, and fit JUST the movie on a regular DVD. This will work for a good portion of the movies out there but newer movies may need to be split up to 2 DVDs if you don't want to compress.

Take a look at DVDShrink (freeware):
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_so.../dvd_shrink.cfmBTW, if you rip the DVDs into an ISO file, you can probably use VLC Media Player to play them directly from the ISO files.

Thanks guys! I do not plan to back up to another removable media like a dual layer dvd .. bleah. I just want to work toward having all my DVDs online from a hard disk (or three).
DVDFab worked pretty well tonight. I was able to carve out just the main movie from several DVDs, and that made them between 3 and 5 GB each. They play nicely with KMPlayer, but I still haven't found the nice playlist front end I am looking for.
Windows Media Player also throws up on them. It doesn't seem to like a decrypted DVD.

Or zoomplayer with the
free Xlobby (see xlobby.com for forums and help) as your frontend. Doesn't get much better than that (for DiY anyway).

I CANT BELIEVE NO ONE HAS MENTIONED IT LOL
CloneDVDMobile and AnyDVDHD have been like candy for a kid to me, allows me to have in depth control when I want it, and when I dont it usually guesses perfectly, outputs to alot of formats at any resolution you tell it to, including generic divx, demos are free for 30 days, and it is a very fast ripper.

DVDFab Platinum & Media Player Classic that comes with the K-Lite codec pack.
Rip them and 2 pass encode to h264 @ 2gigs each and archive them with X-Lobby...dishes are done.

AnyDVD (purchase) & DVD Shrink (free) work great together. Make sure you select the correct audio though (usually DD/AC3 5.1, but sometimes you might choose the directors comment by mistake).
With DVDShrink you can choose to backup to a single .vob file (deselect "split into 1GB chunks" in preferences). This makes it easier for selecting the files when you come to play them.
Each film (just the main title with no extras) would be about 3.7 to 7GB (usually over 5GB). You can select just the main title by clicking "re-author" & then dragging the main title over to the left.
PowerDVD plays .vob files.
