Which screen is best for ambient light situations? High gain or high contrast (ie gray)?

I think that retro-reflective high gain screens like Da-Lite's High Power material work fairly well in ambient light. High gain screens that use sheen to achieve that gain don't do so well in high ambient light. From what I have seen the matte neutral gray screens seem to tolerate some ambient light better than anything else.
