Which ones is the better buy? The site says Toshiba has the best blacks, buts its 35ms, so may not be suited for gaming. that leaves the Samsung VS Sharp. Has anyone compared picture quality?

15.4 Kit w/ MST (Samsung)
The kit includes the 15.4 LCD module, MST controller, power supply, all cables (Yes, its comes with LVDS cable), backlight ballast, and remote. Samsung screen is WUXGA, 1900 x 1200, 600:1 contrast, 25ms full on/off timing.

15.4 Toshiba LCD w/ MST Controller
The kit includes the 15.4 LCD module, MST controller, power supply, all cables (Yes, its comes with LVDS cable), backlight ballast, and remote. Toshiba screen is WUXGA, 1900 x 1200, 350:1 contrast, 35ms full on/off timing. Even though the contrast is low from factory, this panel has the best blacks by far compared to the other panels.

15.4 Kit w/ MST (Sharp)
The kit includes the 15.4 LCD module, MST controller, power supply, all cables (Yes, its comes with LVDS cable), backlight ballast, and remote. Sharp screen is WUXGA, 1900 x 1200, 400:1 contrast, 25ms full on/off timing.

Do yo really think anyone here has bought 3 different $250 Wuxga Lcd's at the SAME time to compare them?

And if they did would they have been able to build 3 different projectors so they could test them in projectors at the same time? Because that would be the only way to truly test the contrast and response time on these panels. Stripped an in a projector.

Now that being said I actually have used all 3 in a projector but there was no possible way to tell a difference. Try looking at a TV and then looking at a different one 2 weeks later and tell me which one looked better.

Two different members here have said that they thought the Toshiba had better blacks than the Samsung in their projectors. But this was an opinion taken several weeks after they replaced screens. So it probably is correct but it might be a bit off.

thanks for your reply. price isnt a big issue, i wouldnt mind getting the one that ppl say have better blacks, but its 35ms refresh rate worries me. you say u have tried the samsung 25ms and the toshiba 35ms and cannot tell a difference? in high motion applications like games is there any ghosting?

thanks

I understood what he said a little differently. The way I took his comment was like this...

I'm one of the few people who have used them all, but unfortunately not at the same time. I did not notice any glaring differences between the panels, but it's very hard to make an 'A : B : C comparison' when you look at model 'A' one week, model 'B' a couple weeks later, and model 'C' weeks after that. None of the panels had any apparent major shortcomings.

If I recall correctly I saw a "little" smearing with the Lcd, but none with the Sharp or Samsung. But that was well over a year ago so I could be mistaken.

So jonjandran if you were getting in the new group buy right now and had a choice between the sharp and samsung which would you get? (ignoring the price difference)
I'm thinking the samsung sounds pretty good but both of my laptops have really nice sharp UXGA and WUXGA screens.

I'd go with the Sharp.

I saw some ghosting on the Toshiba when I was using it. Don't know about the others though.

I was getting worried when I saw this topic.

But my new 17" WUXGA which I am pretty sure is a sharp has better colors than both though. (unfortunately LaptopVideo2Go's EDID tool can't pull the data out of my GF 8700M GT properly)

I haven't used the other brands, but I had a sharp and that thing held up like a champ!

I checked out that review thing -Bill-, but it's hard to tell which one is better without having the source images. I wish that douche bag had just posted links to the background images so that we could check them out on our own monitors easily. Also, how much do you want to bet that a picture of THAT webpage displayed on that person's sharp would show monitors with 2 different colors. Even though the thread was started to show how bad it is; oddly enough most people on that forum preferred the Sharp.

Anyone have any more inputs on the speeds of the monitors? Trying to decide which monitor my next build is going to be, and wondering if there will even be a noticeable difference in the 25ms vs the 35ms, or if I should abandon the speed issue and go after other monitor qualities, like contrast or color. This PJ is going to see a lot of gaming, PC and 360, along with a bachelor pad action-movie theatre place. Any feedback or "wish I had...'s" now that the WUXGAs have been around a few months?
JPD
I suspect the actual response times on these monitors might change (get slower) when subjected to the heat our projectors throw. A fast monitor in a hot enclosure might be slower than a slow monitor in cool enclosure. For that reasons comparisons in non control environments are probably not dependable.

In a projector, LCD response time gnerally seems to not be a problem.

We're not entirely sure why this is, but in an LCD monitor that I found to be unacceptable in it's original form for gaming, it turned out to be just fine for a projector. Maybe it's a psychological effect, of having a greater physical distance for the eyes to track, but ghosting never seemed to be a problem for my old LG panel rated for 25ms response. It would noticeably ghost playing Far Cry on it as a monitor, but as a projector, I never caught it ghosting at all.

My personal theory is that the increased intensity of the light makes the LCD material react faster, due to more heat. I know that LCDs are temperature sensitive, since the LCD in my car stereo is incredibly slow at -35 degrees. The seconds on the track time don't get a chance to catch up before they change again, yet at 20 degrees, they're fine. I figure that this likely plays a part in the observed effect.

Just to let you know, the toshiba is really good but has a bleeding issue for folded design !!
I might have to sell mine and get an other one because of that !
I really can't change my setup for unfolded !
But beside that ... I really like it !
