Fellow LL member GeniuS312 discovered here that a 250watt 4200k version of the high contrast powerball is out in the wild. I am sure you all know about the 150 watt bulb that member elken2004 has devoted much of his time to here. I am using the philips CDM and i must say that the contrast is on par with many comercial PJs however if you dont have a high transmissive LCD screen as I do then the brightness can lack a bit. This seems like the answer to many of us diyers, great contrast, small arc now with 100watt more power! Thanks GeniusS312 for noticing this, just when in time too as I was about to start my next build laugh.gif
.

If anyone gets there hands on one of these report your findings here. I am hoping to test one within this month if I can get hold of one from the store below.

where can i buy a 250w ceramic + ballast that will ship to australia?
GeniuS312
Ok, Hold on a sec ...
I have not discovered this lamp! I disturbed arizonavideo too much tongue.gif
He is the one that knows a LOT on lamp, he talked directly to OSRAM America, and they told him that these lamps were about to be on sale .. they were being tested by OSRAM germany at this time !
So I passed 2 weeks searching for them and I think I finally found them!
As I can see, some site are already selling them now smile.gif
112 Euro for 2 is not that bad I guess...
If we can have a group buy and have them for 50$ each, I'll sure go with it smile.gif
Well anyway, I'll keep you posted with my friend's contact at OSRAM Germany, and it would be nice if someone could try to do the same from the site you just poested smile.gif

Big tkx to arizonavideo

Ah well I credit you for disturbing him.... thanks AV.

I know this may sound real sad but I am really excited about this lamp. I cant wait till ppl get their hands on it and do some testing. However the bulb off the site I poseted is very expenisive compaired to the powerballs 150 they sell in the UK. I wonder what the prices will translate over in the US and the rest of the world. Hopefully a group buy will produce a decent price for us.

The spectral response is exactly the same as for the 150 watt, but instead of being 14,500 lm its 25,000 lm, ditto on cri @ 98,

and as to the 12,000 hr spec, well they under spec all of their lamps, so the life will the same as most other lamps, just depends on the seller, as usual they always up the spec,, typical sales technique..

with that link, just open up metal halide, then HID, then goto HCI TS link,

What type of ballast will we need to run these new bulbs? I have a 250 watt ballast and I would love for it to work with these new ceramic bulbs.

Waaaa, this is exactly the bulb I was looking for !!
Where did you get them ?

I am sure so excited about this lamp !!
I ve been reading the forum for about 6 month now, I m finally starting me project but still searching for the best light source ...
I am sure THIS is the best light source and I can't wait to get my hand on one !

If anyone can have a group buy or can have them for cheaper then 56Euro each ... this is about $80 US !
weldonjb
This is a very exciting developmentism!

Now if we can find a nice US source for a reasonably priced single lamp, ballast and base purchase!

Hmm I was about to get a bulb from the n-joy music shop I posted a link to earlier, however they seem to only accept internet banking and money transfer as payment so not for me.

To DIYers in the UK I just got a 250 watt ballast from ebay seller 123rwilson for under £30. I got my old 150 watt ballast from him last year, he doesnt mention international delivery but it wouldnt harm asking....

I think they are not using 110V in UK but 230V ... do you have an inverter or something similar ?

I dont need one since I live in the UK but thanks for the heads up I am sure others will appreaciate to know the voltage differences if they don't already do so. Be carefull buying ballasts abroad.

Another site that I reccomend is http://www.izzotek.com/. It's a fabulous French DIY projector site with lots of DIY PJing goodies including 250 watt ballasts. They ship worldwide, I got a lot stuff off them for my first build.

Ok, I'm a little confused by that site. The picture is of a RX7S socket double ended lamp, but most HCI-250 descriptions say FC2.

The description at that site is such: POWERBALL HCI-TS® : (HIT-DE-CE/RX7s|CDM-TD) Sockel: RX7s, RX7s-24, Fc2, 72-245 Watt Innovativer POWERBALL®-Technologie, UV-reduziert ...

So, is the lamp RX7S or FC2?

I didn't noticed that...
Well, if someone wants to buy from them, he will probably have to ask some questions before he orders to be sure he gets the right bulb wink.gif

So is there a source to pick these bulbs up in the US?

I'd try it out if I could get it easily for a reasonable price. I've been checking this thread for a while, and since there haven't been any updates I figured I would bite the bullet and try it myself. The 150W version is terrific, and an extra 100 Watts is just icing on the cake.

So does anyone have a link to this bulb and an appropriate ballast?

Trying to navigate a site in a foreign language would drive me insane, so I sent an email to a couple sites (bulbconnection.com and bulbman.com) including the link in the first post of this thread and asked them if they could find it or something very similar.

Hopefully they can get it cheaper, the price of the lamp in the link is about $150 US. I sent the emails late last night, hopefully I'll have some good news some time today.
Kristoph
I sent an email to all the sites I found stocked the bulb in Germany and have not recieved a single reply. It is driving me crazy that hese bulbs are available but not to people outside Germany.

I was just having a read through this thread and there hasn't been much activity lately so i am ot too sure what the situation is. I have found the powerball 250w ceramic for relatively cheap....

http://www.lampspecs.co.uk/Light-Bulbs-Tub...ed-Ceramic-250W

they will also seel you ballasts, caps, ignitors etc. although these extras are not mentioned on the site, just give their technical support an email stating which bulb you want, electricity source, etc. and they can give very reasonable quotes for the whole whack.

I used them before when purchasing my masive tubular so wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

Just going through my emails i even have our correspondance so could give you the guys name and email if that would help (if he still works there as this is over a year ago at least)

good luck guys!

Edit: I just noticed this bulb is the cct 3000k bulb (ward) compared to the 42000k version. I could email to see if they could get the other type.

That would be cool. I searched their site and that's the only 250W ceramic I found.

I'm definitely still interested in this bulb... if we can actuallly find it somewhere.

I would also like one of these bulbs. I made my first projector last year with a 150w ceramic lamp, unfortunately due to time constraints I only managed to post half of the progress on here and never put the results on.

When I get time (who knows when that will be...), I want to make a few adjustments to my otherwise competent projector, one of these is to make it brighter. With a precondenser and one of these 250w lamps I think I will achieve the brightness I want (I'm very happy with the lamp colour and that it doesn't use loads of power). I will also post the rest of the pictures for my build.

I am really excited about this little powerhouse! I can't wait for results; I'm going to have to get me one soon.

I'm finally getting back into PJ design and making progress and the ceramic route is the way I'm going. Hope to see real world results posted soon...

hi everyone,

This discussion excites me - i did a lil looking around and found the following two items - i hope i'm not repeating!:

Osram in North America:
http://catalog.osram-os.com/catalogue/cata...003f4a800040023

I'm gona make a few calls on Monday and see what info i get - i'll post back here. Also I noticed something on Sylvania's site that 'may' indicate work with Osram - not sure how to follow that up other than calling them and asking them for a bulb with the same specs.

See here:
http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProducts/L...alarcPowerball/
Notice the page title: 'Osram Sylvania' Metalarc Powerball

If there is any substance to it - then this may 'may' indicate some upcoming mass production. But perhaps i'm just wishing.

Last - is a suggestion, perhaps in a coop with someone from Europe? order some 50 or 100 bulbs and bring em to North America?.

ps. i'm from Canada, pretty new at this, i finished what i call phase #1 of a projector, it's watchable only in the dark (original ohp light) and i'm looking to go to phase #2 in July - lighting.

cheers!

Did anyone notice the 400w CMH in the osram catalog? Or is this not in distribution yet?

http://catalog.myosram.com/zb2b/b2b/start....;browserminor=4

Sorry the link didn't work, go to: HID lamps/ceramic tech/2nd powerball link

This would be even better, whenever it is available.

guys i'm afraid i got some bad news. Directly from the Sylvania Canada guys. This bulb (250w/942) has actually been discontinued, they've no access to it (atleast here in Canada), and current distribution is only in and for Europe as you've all noticed. They have no info on an upcoming replacement for this particular bulb. sad.gif

I hope someone has found something somewhere in the States atleast who has access to them. Alternatively someone is going to Europe and would maybe take a group order of two bulbs each??? i wish i knew someone overthere.

I would have to say even here in europe getting your hands on one of these is proving difficult. I have been in correspondance from a guy at lampspecs and he has no word of when and if they will ever stock this bulb, only the 3000k version. Its not looking promising at the moment. ohnoes.gif

Ok, some good news,

I've been in touch with a lady from Starlight in Germany, and the shipping cost is 50 euros to me in canada - for one bulb, i'm awaiting reply on shipping cost for a larger number of bulbs. Will keep everyone posted.

ps. this is for Osram Powerball HCI-TS 250/942 NDL PB - Fc2 - 250 Watt aka 4k temperature wink.gif

cheers!

Really? Same Specs? (size, color temperature, CRI...)

I really want to give this bulb a try. I just finished building a projector with a 150W ceramic bulb, but it just doesn't seem to be bright enough. If I could get a 250W version, I think that would be just about perfect.

Hopefully shipping from India doesn't kill the deal, but if you would be willing to send them to the US, I'd be willing to put something together.

This maybe the closest Philips equivalent in NorthAmerica!

Check this out: MasterColor CDM Elite 210w or 315w either comes in a T9 (Clear) Lamp, 21k-34k lumens (respectively), ceramic, both are average life of 20k, and CRI 90, burn efficiency of 115lumen/w, and color temp of 3k (unoptimal) but i'm willing to live with. There is even a single ballast which is capable of driving both bulbs (210w and 315w!): Advance e-Vision Dimming Electronic IZTMH-210-315-R for (1) 315W or 210W.

Specs are here:
http://www.nam.lighting.philips.com/us/eca.../tds/220624.pdf
http://www.nam.lighting.philips.com/us/eca.../tds/218313.pdf
http://www.nam.lighting.philips.com/us/new...ite_leaflet.pdf

I'm thinking this is the closest so far to the Osram Powerball 250/942, its made for North America so finding it locally or ordering it will not be a $100 shipping ordeal. Having a single ballast to drive either lamps at different wattages, and the fact they are dimmable, is making either of them really attractive - 210w should be more that perfect for me and if i ever change my mind then i can get the 315w and use the same ballast.

What do you guys and gals think?? any input is appreciated smile.gif

Stay tuned for pricing wink.gif

I'm not thrilled about the 3000K color temp, but then again I've never really seen a nicely optimized projector using a bulb with such a low color temp. The 150W ceramic I've been using makes just as good (or even better) color than my 6500K bulb, so I'm curious to see how well you could tune a 3000K bulb.

This might be worth a try, especially if you could flip a switch and turn up the brightness.

I think I remember somebody tried a 3000K bulb on this forum...

To be honest i was tempted to give this bulb a try as seem to remember it not being over priced. Unfortunately i am in the middle of a move to a temporary residence with no facilities to tinker so results would be a long way off yet...and who knows the higher colour temp bulb may be available then? dry.gif

Thank you guys for the feedback!! i much appreciate it!! i can adjust brightness/contract/luminosity/color at my tv-box, and at my LCD, thats why i'm thinking it could go along way offsetting the 3k of the bulb.

thanks again!

but now check this! I'm gona have to start a new reply at the thread level.

Right Here!

What did the price end up being? I'm guessing it depends on the quantity, but what's an estimate?

hello PhDeviant,

Well part of the reason i posted here with the news is to see if there is real demand, and then i would get a large shipment at a lower cost than buying/shipping/taxes/customs of 1-2bulbs. I have not worked out how much each bulb would be in a USD/CAD (they are very close these days) - i'd say approximately $150 - but do not quote me on that!!!

i'll wait till Monday and if not enough people show interest then i'll not go with the large order. Or perhaps i may consider an ebay offering.

cheers!

I too would like to get one of these 250w bulbs. Some say that the 575, while very bright, is also very hot, so the 250 could be the right compromise between wattage/brightness/heat.

Everyone keep their eyes peeled...
