Welcome to my plog. This is my second pj. and it will be another 10.6"er
this time around i have the experience to make something special. in other words i plan to build a clean and quality projector.
I will be disassembling my first pj. for some parts and to rebuild that as well
here is the parts10.6" wxga monitor and genisis controller from johnzo
220mm and 330mm fresnals cut to length from johnzo
315 to 325 (approx) varible focal length projection lense from an ohp
lexan heatshield or might use the tempered glass from a ohp that i have
plus rite 400w metal halide reduced envelope bulb
sola ballast m59 400w multi tap
wires, fans, tape, nails , blood sweat and tears
Ok here we go.

i already have all the parts exept for the light setup
i was going to buy a setup from somone on the forum . but my fiance' surprised me and bought me this setup for only 30.00 more brand new . what a girl .
she hated when i worked on my first pj. but when it was finished she loved it so much she wanted me to build another one.
so this is the new lamp setup . hopefully it gets here soon

this whole setup was 79.00 shipped ups to my door yey

heres the panel and controller
i used this in my old pj and will be using it for the new one as it is already to go

and here is the lenses

here is the strip of the panel
i did this on my first pj. but the images were not posted so i will show them now
it was very nerve wracking
started one edge with a razor blade carefull to only take the top layer off

then pulled from side to side until it came off

here it is
jeffek
Dec 30 2007, 09:20 PM
the next layer was tricky and almost always comes off it strips
it is like a tacky glue layer and took forever ..

jeffek
Dec 30 2007, 09:22 PM
i put the lcd back into the original frame after some carefull trimming and fitting
you can see how transparent the lcd is now and the shine of the finish

Dec 31 2007, 06:45 PM
ok been searching the forums and was curious if anyone has tried to remove the ag from the front of this panel
if there is one?? it apears the top right corner on the front of the lcd is slightly coming up
it looks like a thick sheet hope its not the polorizer dont want to pull on it until i find out if it might be an ag layer
i saw a diagram on here somewhere that showed all the layers of the 10.6" panel from johnzo
but i cant find it anywhere now.. mabey the new years beers are kicking in lol

QUOTE (Sinner7 @ May 7 2007, 10:10 AM)

1 Question: Does my 10.6 wxga panel have 3 layers on the front (polar / AG / polar) or just one (polar)?
Answer: The 10.6 wxga panels come with two different layer configurations on the front viewing side. If you have 3 front layers (NOT the mirror side), the top polar will lift and you'll still see an image with the panel operating. If you have 1 layer, lifting a layer corner the image will dissappear and will turn white. This test requires a backlight and a test movie to play while you lift the corner of the layer(s). The 1 layer version is better, not appearing to have AG so you don't need to strip.
2 Question: Does my 10.6 wxga panel have 3 layers on the back (backlight, mirrored side)?
Answer: Yes, all the kits so far have 3 layers on the back (mirror 1 / mirror 2 / polar). The mirror layers can be stripped easily by hand. Mirror 1 can be removed in one piece very carefully by starting at the corners and pulling towards the center of the panel alternating directions. Peel any layer parrallel to the glass. Mirror 2 can be removed by hand by pulling thin strips approx. 1/2 inch wide. Mirror 2 may leave minor glue residue that will clean up with water, tissue or soft fingernail work. That leaves just a shiny nice factory polar.
3 Question: Will totally stripping my 10.6 for SHC polarizer replacement improve my projection?
Answer: Comparing a fully stripped (down to the panel glass) 10.6" with loose mounted SHC polars to a mirror stripped 10.6" with original factory polars using the same lighting, fresnel spacing and projection size yielded the following results. Brightness: Center white screen lux was 100 with the factory polars and 70 with the SHC. That's a 30% drop in brightness using SHC polars

. The white was also crushed by the SHC. Contrast & Glowies: The SHC setup has very nice even black screen (no glowies) using split fresnels. The factory polars have some glowies using split fresnels but they can be reduced by adjusting panel angle. Both SHC and factory polars produced terrible glowies using unsplit fresnels. Color rendering: The factory polars rendered colors much brighter and cleaner that SHC polars. I prefer the factory polars with split fresnels for the brightest, cleanest projection. Using a 150w ceramic, the SHC brightness cut was too much. The SHC setup may work much better with 400w light engine to make up for the loss.
never mind this answers my questions .. if anyone else was curious
i have one layer on the front of my panel .. just a polor . no ag layer so i will leave the corner for now it is not in the viewing area and is very tiny. i do however wonder if the case temp was causing the polor to come loose from the panel
anyone ever see that happen before or could it just be a slight defect?

Any news here?! Watching with excitement.

i will be starting on the box build very soon
weldonjb did you end up staying with the foil football on your build?
i may try that until i get a new lamp
i will have pics up soon as i begin the fab process

Can I ask where you got your light setup from?
weldonjb
Feb 15 2008, 04:00 PM
Wow, Jeff ... sorry, didn't see the question. Yes, I used the foil for well over a year, and was happy.
Couple of weeks ago I picked up a candle holder from Pier One that had a large spherical reflector on top, which I harvested. It works as well ... maybe a bit better, but the foil was fine.

finally starting to work on this again
turns out my panel does have 2 front layers
i pulled off the top one like a piece of tape lol ( making sure the image was still there

).... it was
at first i didnt even want to mess with the panel , it was working fine
but i noticed after running it in my old pj for 2 months that the front layer was starting to bubble slightly so i decided it was time to go.
heres a couple pics of the front layer , i dont know what it is .. anti glare , polar ??? . i tried to show light going through it in front of a window .. it appears to block quiet a bit of light

and in front of my fridge

more to come
i just got a pc case and am thinking folded design but im not sure i can do it yet
might just buy some wood and go haas .. what do you guys think ?
jeffek
Apr 18 2008, 12:44 AM
here is the pc case i have .
i have measured everything and it will all fit in there nice. i may need to change the fressies though to some with shorter fl
i threw one of my projection lenses in there just to see what it would look like

i couldnt resist lol
i think im going to try the pc case and if i cant do it i will just build a haas

heres with a lense sitting in it

and another

and heres a 7lb salmon i cought on opening day saturday lol i just couldnt resist showing this beast
it took a little cleo blue and silver spoon.
also got some rainbow trouts but one pics enough

Nice pc case! Wish I had started with something that fancy. Do you have a plan for cooling? Those cases have more holes than Swiss cheese
jeffek
Apr 18 2008, 01:54 AM
i think im going to box off the inside with wood to eliminate all the holes
i have some good ideas for cooling .. actually i dont care how loud this thing becomes , i am going to make sure that the temps are super low
jeffek
Apr 18 2008, 11:51 PM
ok ran into a small snag
this case is just not big enough for the fresnel lense i have (cullminator) lol sorry about the spelling)
so i guess its on to a search for a bigger pc case

well i finaly bought the wood and screws and glue ect. that i need to finish this project
now just have to borrow a jig saw and i can get started
after some carefull thinking i have decided to build frames for the lcd and lenses . ( unlike my first pj. although it worked great without them)
i have been searching the boards looking for ideas to box them in
if anyone has any good ideas or links to other projects framing a 10.6 please post them or let me know
thanks

I see you're looking for a decent PLOG for a 10.6. Check out the link below for Sinner7's PJ setup, he did a great job framing.

finaly bought the wood and supplys to finish this project
now the only problem is i dont know what i want to do
i have been tooling around with a folded design but i dont know if thats what i want yet
here is some pics of me checking the size of everything where it needs to go . so i have an idea of how big this is going to be
i may need to do a folded design , i just dont want it to be as big as my last build so i dont think im doing a straight shooter unless i do a haas style design

heres a straight shooter i built just to see if i like the size
may use it , may not

testing my lamp .. it has been sitting in the basement for some time .. had to fire it to see if it still works
plus was fun watching my kitchen turn into a tanning booth

i stole my wifes 7" polorid dvd player today
well actualy i bought her a new one so i could have her old one
im going to start a folded pc case build after this one .
so while i am waiting for the morning to fire up my table saw and continue my build i figured id rip this dvd player apart

more to come on my build tomorrow

got some more work done today and man it feels good
started on the frames

heres one with the fres installed

should finish tomorrow on the box

another quick update i am working on the light engine for this pj
it is the old school football 400w lamp
however i have a very bright idea (no pun intended) on how to get max lumens from this lamp
my reflector will be made of rolled aluminum flashing
jeffek
Jan 24 2009, 03:37 PM
ok quick question i have a few parts from overhead projectors i have taken apart over the years
i want to use the thermal protection switch from one . however i dont know if it is 120v or if it was after the resistor in the wiring and is less voltage
this is what it looks like

thanks

has everyone lost faith in this hobby ???

Well... not everyone has experience with electronics or OHPs.
That being said, you might get a better response if you ask this question in the Beginner's section with a descriptive post title.
Good luck!
jeffek
Jan 27 2009, 03:27 AM
thanks for the advice quasi .
and sorry everyone if my last post sounded rude . i was getting very frustrated with my build and had a few beers too
on a good note though i have figured out my wireing for the pj. and im hoping to finish my build tomorrow .
more pics to come

Just thought I'd let you know that I am following your plog...But I don't know anything about a thermal protector....
As for where everyone is....Can't answer that.....I have noticed many new names and not so many old names...dunno why...heh...maybe they are all taking a year off...

Anyway, take comfort that at least one person is following your progress...

i will finish this before superbowl though. not that there are any good teams playing in it

well its crunch time
super bowl is tomorrow and although i dont have all the pieces that i ordered yet (t15 bulb ect.) i am going to use what i have
i dont know why im posting pics yet . this is not the pj i wanted to build so i will disassemble it on monday and finish .
i just need it to work at this moment

again i am ripping this apart after superbowl to build my haas
say tuned

disaster strikes !!!!
i was screwing the mst board down with a cordless screwdriver and i slipped of the screw and knocked a resistor off the board
the resistor is as small as a flea . theres no way i can solder it back on i dont even think its possible ... its tiny
im going to try to find out more about this board . mabey i can bridge the gap with solder . i dont know
looks like im watching superbowl on my tv . and the worst part is im having people come over and i was hoping to have the pj up and running

if anyone knows where i can find a schematic for this board it would be appreciated
Windcalmer
Feb 1 2009, 01:20 AM
Oh man! Sorry to hear. I learned the "manual screwdriver near expensive stuff" rule long ago when I was using a drill to screw in a buddies $300 sub woofer. The screwdriver bit jumped and went right through the rubber surround. I was horrified!!! SO just know that you are not alone.
As far as getting you up and running for the Superbowl...What value was the resistor? Where was the resistor? Can you post the model and serial number off the board. That might help us track you down an answer.

update.
i have a genessis lcd controller for the 10.6 coming in the mail now (thanks borna)
while i wait for it to get here , i have some things to do to the wiring on the pj.
i would like to add a relay so i may turn the lamp and lcd on with the remote
also some temp switch wiring to do
stay tuned for more pics
jeffek
Mar 19 2009, 02:00 PM
well i got my board today (thanks b0rna)
however its one problem after another with this pj. its starting to act like an old beat up chevy or something
my lamp fires for about 20 secs then shuts off
i belive the bulb may be going
this is the bulb that i used in my other plog however it olny has about 100 or so hours on it
i am firing this bulb in about the same position it was in .
i wonder if it not being in the exact same firing position will affect the bulb that much to where it will not fire correctly
any suggestions besides buying another bulb
also im looking for a t15 if anyone has one for sale pm me
jeffek
Mar 19 2009, 02:52 PM
update**
i got the bulb to stay working by taking it out and taping on the outside where the small dimple that holds the liquid metal was
it dislodged and rolled around (sorry for my horrible spelling) and now all is good until the bulb finally goes for good
i did however move to a house with brown panel walls since i started this pj. so now i have to wait to buy a screen .
but i am inpatient lol , so tonight when the sun goes down i will still post screenies of the pj on the wooden panel walls ..
so excited
also this build has been a disaster from the start . it seems like i work in reverse order.
my first build i slapped together and it worked right from the start with no tweaking or anything ..
this build has been so much harder for me and i cant figure out why .
i have to tweak everything ( distances , lighting , wiring , and i finally know how fragile everything can be.
i feel like im walking on egg shells with this one. trying not to break anything else.
jeffek
Mar 19 2009, 11:39 PM
woot shes up and running now
heres some more pics of the box
also i went to joanns fabric store and bought a 4.5 by 6.5 foot piece of black out cloth
what a deal at $11.00
i will try to take some pics of the screen and pj working tonight
will post tonight or tomorrow

oh yah . i forgot to take a pic of the reflector i made
i used a piece of aluminum flashing and wraped it around the back side of the bulb
it works great as a reflector and also takes the heat from the bulb and dissipates it allowing the fans to be more effective at cooling
just a temp solution until my wife lets me spend more money

however im to embarresed to post screenies yet lol.
i am however building a screen today and also taking out the lenses and lcd screen and giving them a much needed cleaning .
SO TONIGHT WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN I WILL POST SCREENIES YAY

im just waiting for a lamp and reflector/condensor , that i bought from someone on the forums to arive
i was going to take pics with the current lamp but i figured why rush it .
the new lamp should be here any day now .
i plan to put the new lamp in this pj. then take pics of the image it projects
however i am ripping this thing apart as originaly planed to finish what may be my final build for the 10.6
each pj. that i buid, i keep thinking of things i wish i would have done previously , so this time i am taking all i have learned along the way
and probably making a folded . i plan to wire everything nice , and to make a permanant home for my lcd and lenses in new frames
then mabey i will move on to the 12.1 panel when i come across enough money
stay tuned lol
