Full Version: Did I Just Ruin My Panel?

Okay, I have had my panel for a while but have been busy reading like a mad man before I started stripping (the panel....you don't want that image).

Anyway, after bothering the heck out of jonjandran and many other members on this forum, I finally thought I had the knowledge to give this a whirl. Jonjandran suggested removing the reflective layers first and not mess with the anti-glare...not yet anyway.

So, I got my papertowels, a 10% acetone mixture with distilled water placed the wet papertowels per the many threads and let her soak for 12 hours (covered in ceran (sp?) wrap) and added the water mixture every couple of hours. We I got a razorblade and tried to lift a corner and it came up easily. I tried to determine what layer I was under and only take the top one...but hard to tell. In any case, I slowly started to lift and it was coming up relatively easily; however it was making a "ripping" noise (which I had heard other people mention that. I did notice quite a few lines underneath that almost look like glue residue. Well I got to a point where it wasn't quite as easy...but still not tough so I applied just a bit more force and the plastic ripped. Not a huge deal I assumed because I had heard of others experience the same thing; however, when I looked at the plastic (and the panel closer) I noticed that it apparently took more than one layer in some parts. The plastic piece that ripped off is thicker in some places than the other...and the panel looks different in the places where the thicker part was. I was told that I would be removing two layers; however, I believe they were supposed to come up in two steps. I want to make sure that 1. I am not taking off layers that were supposed to stay, and 2. that I didn't go past the point of no return. I just put my papertowels back on...I'm taking pictures and posting them.

In the top picture, you can see the very distinct differences between the left and right sides of the plastic piece. The right side is the thicker piece. The middle picture is kind of hard to tell what's going on, but in the third (bottom), you can see the "glue residue" or lines I was speaking of. You can also see the difference in the way it looks on the left where the thicker plastic came up. Someone please give me some guideance as I have stopped where I was at until I hear input from some of you experts! ohnoes.gif

What kind of LCD panel is that?

When I stripped my 10.6" the first layer came off and left a sticky residue while the second layer came off nice and clean.

My advice would be to dry it off and test it. Turn it on and shine a light through to make sure it still works.

It's a sharp wuxga (w02) model. The problem with plugging in and testing is that the rest of my parts (which would allow me to do just that) won't be here for a couple more days so as of right now I can't test. Right now I'm still letting it soak. Should I just let it dry until someone offers additional words of wisdom?

Yep the reflective layer is actually 2 separate lavers.

You are going to pull up the first layer then you water soak and pull up the second layer.

But if you are seeing a dark "tinted" layer you pulled up the polarizer.

Well I just took another look at it and it appears that maybe I'm ok. What I pulled up didn't look dark at all...mostly clear. After looking at it closer I went back to my original corner and got under it. I made sure the layer I lifted wasn't dark tinted...it wasn't. I proceeded to try and lift the layer under that and it peeled right up and it revealed a shiny dark surface underneath. I proceeded to slowly (about an hour) peel the entire sheet off in one piece. Was it possible I pulled both layers off in one motion? The piece I peeled off is shiny but clear....I will post pictures in a few. Any feedback is appreciated.

Yes "sometimes" they pull up in one layer.

Here are some pics....I tried to show the front and back of the layer I peeled off. I also took some shots of the panel. I cleaned it up and untaped the ffcs. The layer I peeled is very shiny almost like a mirror....does this seem like I got what I was after without pulling the polar?

Yes that looks like the reflective layers and not the polarizer. smile.gif
