Okay, so I have a stupid question. While searching several resources provided to me by other members here (thank you) for LCD panels, I noticed that some come with inverters and some do not. Is this a power inverter such as a step down transformer for powering the monitor up? I guess more importantly, do I need this? Sorry to once again display my ignorance on these boards! But thanks for your replies in advance....

Depends on the LCD. If it takes a standard PC power chord, then the inverter is built into the circuit boards. If it takes a round ended plug then it needs an inverter.

If the purpose in looking at LCD panels is to obtain one for use in a projector, then you do not need the inverter, as it's purpose is to provide power to the backlight.
It inverts the 12v (usually) power to much, much higher voltage for starting of the backlight assembly.
If you are actually looking at LCD monitors (not just panels), the inverter will be a separate circuit board from the LCD controller if the monitor uses an external 12V-19V power adapter, or, if the monitor uses an internal power supply (with a standard iec power cord attached to the monitor), then most often the internal power supply and inverter are on the same board, but still separate from the LCD controller board.

Thanks for the replies guys. Actually I'm just looking at wuxga 15.4" panels (specifically the sharp model) for use in a projector. I just want to make sure that I get everything I need because I assume if I get one without the invertor and needed one...that obtaining one might be more of a pain than buying the "package" in the beginning.

You would need the inverter primarily if you wanted to test the panel before stripping the backlight out of it.
However, most of the panels sold are from laptops, and as such, the inverter supplied is intended to be used in a laptop, and you won't have the right connectivity to attach such an inverter to a controller like the ones Johnzo (manhattanlcd.com) sells.
In one of the pictures on Johnzos website for an MST 15.4 controller, he shows an inverter attached to the controller, so, you'd want to check with him (or whoever you buy one from) as to whether the controller will come with the inverter or not.

Good Luck!

Thanks again for the input. I intend to use Johnzo's controller so I will check with him.

Yes the controllers from Johnzo for the 15.4" and the 10.6" come with the proper inverter.
