Is there a big difference between 720p and 1080p?
I am looking to buy or build a projector ( with cheap replacement bulbs ) to watch movies, play xbox 360, wii and watch Basketball games. I have not had much interaction with hi def , blu-ray or a high def player.
Will a EVO suffice my needs?
I would love to get a hd receiver and watch all of my cable on.

theres a diference that can be spot by the trained eye.
blu ray looks awesome on my pj. its just amazing. if you will build a hd pj you should get hd inputs like a ps3

or get a hd cable package.
i havent used the evo but i love how my pj looks already. build one the satisfaction is incredible and the results are awesome too.

From what I've read, the difference between 720p and 1080i/p becomes noticeable on projections over 100" diagonal in size. However it is completely up to personal taste. Some people are able to tell the difference in quality between 720p and 1080i. Some are able to tell the difference between 1080i (interlaced) and 1080p (progressive). But really, any one of them will look good if it's projected big. XBOX 360 can work all the way up to 1080p resolution. Same with PS3.
As for the EVO, I haven't been following it all that much, but IIRC the EVO isn't a HD projector. I believe it is best suited for 480p content (DVD movies, Nintendo Wii). Although it can handle HD content, I believe it downscales the signal down to 480p.
If you don't mind putting in the time and effort, building your own like prjavelin said is the way to go. However if you're not a DIY kind of guy or want something right away, buying a projector like the EVO might be your best bet.
Before I started my build, I saw hi-def content and really liked it. I currently own a plain old SDTV that can't even do 480p and it's fine, but if I'm gonna have a big-ass projector, I want to do it right. Hi-def it is! I just got back from my friends place. He has a 37" 720p LCD and we played some xbox 360 on it tonight. Seeing a game (Call of Duty 4) first on my brother-in-law's 480p CRT and then on my buddy's 720p LCD was a huge difference. Those games are meant to be played in hi-def.
When I decided to build a projector, my reasoning for going with a 10.6" 720p design was that it was sort of middle of the road cost wise. I could have built a standard 15", and save some money, but then I would be limiting myself in terms of inputs and resolution (can't really do hi-def). I could have decided to go with a 15.4" wuxga (1080p) build, but at the time the costs were too high (that kontron controller and the pro triplet are quite pricey). So I decided to do the 10.6 which suits my needs. It can play high-def content as it is a 720p design. It has a lot of inputs (component, HDMI, s-video, composite), and the price seemed reasonable for what I was getting.
Take your time to think about what exactly you need and go with that. Read lots and make an educated decision.
Have fun.
