I just purchased a lightware vp800, which is an identical clone of the ctx Ezpro 500 series, for $20.00. Its kind o broken, but quite fixable. However, the freshnel is pretty scratched up.
I was about to consider the 150w light kit from johnzo but I also came across these bulbs, which are rated for 150hrs. btw, the same bulb is used on my moviemate.

Dont retrofit it, sell it to me so i can. It is the perfect size for what i need.

Actually im kidding, my parents would kill me if i bought that. I say go for it and then maby sell it to someone or if you can build it sheep enough give it as a present to someone.

If you don't mind me asking, where are earth are you finding such amazing deals on these older projectors?

I'm pretty fortunate to live in the sf bay area, so there a lot of electronic firms always throwing out stuff but some of my best deals were either scored on craigslist or freecycle.
The ask 970 was free from freecycle- a church was giving away some overheads and stuff in the back corner was the ask
The lightware and the litepro were from a computer surplus store. The litepro I paid $45 because it was in mint condition. The lightware I negotiated down to $20 because of its condition. The trick is not let them know you can repair it ;-)
But on craigslist I've gotten a NEC MT810 commercial pj for $10, two sharps XG units (the big ones) for about $20-25 apiece, an infocus 4805 for $50 w/a dead lamp waiting to be retrofitted through ywh, and a contact to another computer surplus store that was selling me working Eiki 2000 lumen pjs for $35.
My local college was auctioning older pjs and I've scored an infocus lcd for $20 and 2 crt pjs for $15 each.
But I'm still building them cuz they're fun to do so here I still am...

I remembered playing with one (the Ezpro, i believe) of these a few years ago and I remember the speed of the lcd was pretty slow. I'm hoping that the VP800 will be faster but if that's not the case I have to find a high resolution lcd that will fit inside this unit.
The original is a 6.4" 4:3, and I can say my 7" 16:9 lcd will NOT fit, so its gotta be smaller. The ps1 screen comes to mind, but its image quality is worse than the VP800, so if anyone has a suggestion (and its a cheap alternative) I'm interested

Damn right.

I spent my 20s there and still miss it a lot. There was a computer parts recycling place in Berkeley I used to plunder -- basically one guy in a room floor to ceiling with computer parts, and nothing there went for more than $5. Nowadays, I got local yahoos trying to sell their crappy old projectors for $700

I went to Cal (man, do the bears suck!- Go Stanford!!) and I wonder if that store is still there.

I'm less inclined to change the light engine as I now have a link to getting evd bulbs that last up to 200hrs and only cost 3.39, so to have it last 2000hrs will only set me back $33.90, which is a great deal.

Yes, the temp is lower but looking at your images (original is on the right)

I'll be okay. I can always get a color correcting filter to better the whites

I just bought one of these and in the setup process my dog tripped on a cable and nocked it down, breaking the plasticy lense inside that magnifies the image do any of you have one?
