I am planning on making my own projector and I am currently in the process of figuring out how I am going get all my inputs to be displayed on my projector. I could use a TV with all the inputs I need, but I would like my inputs to go through a computer so that they can be recorded. What I am looking for is a video capture card that has a HD input and low def input. Searching on the internet all I can find for HD is tuner cards. Is there such a thing, and what would be the best choices? What is the delay on a HD capture cards?

HD capture cards (720p/1080i) are not available for external "boxes" such as cable or satellite, or at least not at a price that's affordable. You can find HD tuner cards for Clear QAM (unencrypted HD cable transmission), and also Free to Air Satellite. Some of the HD tuner cards i've seen allow the use of a cablecard, which will allow you view paid cable programming. Cable companies are supposed to have support for cablecards now. As far as satellite... hmm not sure if they have to support cablecard or not. Basically it comes down to this... if you want a card that has an HDMI/DVI or HD component input for recording, it's basically a no go at the moment. Most cards of this nature are for handling Non-Linear Editing, and not PVR type software packages.

For standard def (composite, s-video) you can use something like a PVR-150 from Hauppauge. It has a MPEG hardware encoder that does a good job. It's also compatible with plenty of software PVR packages out there today. There is another card out there that's kind of pricey, and it accepts component inputs, but only at 480i. Simjedi was familiar with the card as I believe he owns one.
